New Attainable Housing Coming to Mount Pleasant Community
In what is set to be a significant uptick in residential development, Mount Pleasant’s Carolina Park is anticipated to witness considerable growth in the upcoming years. The Town Council has sanctioned the final reading of the proposed attainable housing district that will bring more affordable housing options to the community.
Details of the Development
The new housing project will be constructed on a 12.64-acre site located off of Park Avenue Boulevard. Under this proposal, up to 100 attainable houses will be built. Prosperity Builders, known for their previous attainable housing project, Gregorie Ferry Towns in Mount Pleasant, will oversee the construction. The land, which once belonged to the Seacoast Church, was sold to the developers with the vision of creating this affordable housing district. Residents can look forward to moving into these new townhomes within the next two to three years.
Community Response
Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie praised the decision, emphasizing the community’s needs being taken into account. “10,000 people go to Seacoast and Seacoast made the decision to sell this for this purpose because it’s best for our community,” said Mayor Haynie during the council meeting. He also assured the citizens that the traffic increase due to this development would be far less than that of commercial projects in the area, terming this as the ‘least intense use’ of the property.
Funding and Benefits
Mount Pleasant Council Member Guang Ming Whitley revealed that the project is privately funded through Seacoast Church and Prosperity Builders, eliminating the need for tax dollars. He believes it’s an ‘exciting opportunity’ for those unable to afford housing in Mount Pleasant despite working there. Council representatives have also addressed concerns over school overpopulation, assuring that the ongoing expansion of a local elementary school will prevent such issues. The new townhomes are likely to range from $300,000 to $400,000 in cost.
Local Business Perspective
Bill Hoffman, a co-owner of Rooted Bottle Shop, believes the development will be beneficial. “The fact that they are doing something that’s a little bit different, to help people who can’t afford housing, which is skyrocketing in Mount Pleasant as everyone knows, I think it’s a good thing,” he expressed.
Overall, this move towards affordable housing, executed with community well-being in mind, seems a welcome change in Mount Pleasant’s real estate sector.
