A woman who had been missing since 2022 was discovered buried in her own backyard at a residence in Myrtle Beach. The suspect, 54-year-old Sheridan Fogle, has been arrested and charged with murder.
According to a statement from the police department, Penni Whiteside, 51, had last been seen in the spring of 2022. Based on recent information received, her remains were suspected to be buried in her backyard under a fire pit. After obtaining a search warrant, police discovered her remains on June 12, over two years after her disappearance.
Sheridan Fogle was arrested and charged with her murder on Thursday, August 29. The suspect and the victim were reported to have shared the residence. The police statement underscored the tragedy, labeling Whiteside’s death as a “senseless crime of violence” and bowing to “continue to pray for the family and friends of the victim”.
While the police department provided no further comment, due to the ongoing investigation, the shocking news has left neighbors of Whiteside in disbelief.
Penni’s neighbor, Nikolai Zaitsev expressed his thoughts saying, “I mean, you have kids playing at the park here every day, and birthday parties, weddings, et cetera that happen here. I’m sure nobody around here had a clue about what was actually going on,”
The suspect, Fogle, is expected to appear in court for a bond hearing on the afternoon on Friday, August 30. The cause of Penni Whiteside’s death has not yet been revealed.
Penni Whiteside’s shocking death raises serious concerns about domestic violence and safety. It’s a distressing reminder of the threats vulnerable individuals face, often within their own homes, and underscores the importance of ongoing advocacy for victims of domestic crimes.
The unfortunate incident, while tragic, also highlights the diligence of the investigation team, who, not deterred by time or lack of leads, eventually apprehended the suspect and offered some closure to the grieving family and friends of Whiteside.
Details surrounding the cause of death and the events leading up to the brutal murder remain undisclosed pending further investigation. As the case proceeds, many hope for justice for Whiteside, and for measures that combat such horrifying instances of violence in the future.
