Charleston is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for the upcoming Midlife Monologues. This special production is all set to kick off on March 12, 2025, at 7 p.m. at the iconic Charleston Music Hall. Tickets for this remarkable event range from $60 to $350 and can be bought at midlife-monologues.com.
The goal of the Midlife Monologues is to shed light on the experiences of women across various generations. It’s an opportunity to share stories that resonate with many, celebrating the journeys that women embark upon, especially during midlife. This event isn’t your typical production; rather, it’s a fusion of storytelling and performance designed to engage and uplift the audience.
The brainchild of this initiative is Kerri Devine, a spirited resident of Sullivan’s Island. With an impressive background, including a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Florida State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Queens University in Charlotte, Kerri has dedicated herself to sharing relatable narratives. Her passion blossomed from a personal crisis related to perimenopause, which inspired her to explore the realms of hormone therapy and creative writing. This journey prompted the desire to connect, educate, and empower women through the Midlife Monologues.
This year’s production promises to be a remarkable blend of creativity, featuring works from exceptional authors and performers. The repertoire will include excerpts from the legendary Mary Oliver, among other award-winning talents. The ensemble cast will welcome both familiar faces and fresh talent. Exciting new additions include Shanola Hampton, Dr. Tonya Maria Matthews, Margaret Anne Florence, Melissa Faliveno, Deena Lang, and Carolyn Murray. Returning ensemble performers will include some of Charleston’s most loved authors, actors, singers, and community leaders such as Kate Baer, Mary Laura Philpott, and Quiana Parler.
This production aims to create a supportive environment, focusing on the emotional and social aspects of midlife transitions that women often face. The project promotes discussions on essential topics such as health and mental well-being, aiming to inspire open dialogue about often-taboo subjects. As an added bonus, the proceeds from this year’s show will benefit organizations devoted to adolescent and maternal mental health, along with education on menopause.
The excitement surrounding the Midlife Monologues doesn’t end with the Charleston production. Plans are already in motion to branch out into a national movement, with aspirations for an original production in New York by late 2025. Spearheaded by Kerri Devine and director Constance Zimmer, this initiative promises to spread the uplifting message of women’s experiences even further.
As Charleston gears up to welcome around 1,000 women for this spectacular evening, there’s no doubt that the Midlife Monologues will spark conversations and provide a sense of camaraderie among its audience. It’s not just a show; it’s a celebration of life and the resilient spirit of women throughout the ages.
So, mark your calendars and get your tickets! The Midlife Monologues awaits, ready to transform the narrative of women’s experiences in a way that promises to be both insightful and empowering.
