Charleston is buzzing with excitement as “Midlife Monologues” returns to the Charleston Music Hall on March 12, 2025, at 7 p.m. If you’re a fan of stories that resonate, this is an event you absolutely won’t want to miss. Located at 37 John St., the Charleston Music Hall will host an inspiring evening filled with the voices of women from all walks of life coming together to celebrate womanhood.
This year, the show features a remarkable 21-woman cast, showcasing a diverse group of writers, actors, musicians, health advocates, artists, and community builders from across the United States. The performance is a fantastic tapestry woven from various perspectives on the complex journey of womanhood. Expect to hear essays, poems, and songs that address everything from personal struggles to triumphs.
Among the talented individuals taking the stage are some familiar faces. You’ll find Quiana Parler, a two-time Grammy Award-winning vocalist known for her work with the jazz ensemble Ranky Tanky. Another prominent member of the cast is Tonya Matthews, the CEO of the International African American Museum, and Carolyn Murray, an Emmy-winning anchor from WCBD-TV. These powerhouse women are sure to deliver a performance that resonates deeply with the audience.
The producer and a cast member, Kerri Devine, describes the event as a celebration that captures both the beauty and the challenges of life. The aim is to create a safe space where women can feel seen and supported as they navigate their own journeys. This is the third showcase of “Midlife Monologues,” and given the sold-out performances in October 2023, it’s clear that this event is striking a chord with audiences.
This collaboration between Kerri Devine and Charleston’s Pure Theatre has already reached nearly 1,000 women from various generations, forging connections through shared stories and experiences. The show isn’t just about midlife; it dives into women’s health and examines the full emotional and relational journey throughout a woman’s life. It’s a production geared toward fostering intergenerational conversations, inviting women of all ages to engage in dialogue about their shared experiences.
For the performance, original works will be showcased alongside pieces from renowned artists such as U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón and Mary Oliver, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see how different voices come together to explore themes of identity, change, and resilience.
And there’s more! An independent bookstore, Buxton Books, will be on-site selling books by the authors featured in the performance. So, not only can you enjoy the show, but you can also pick up some literary treasures to take home.
This year’s cast also includes some exciting new members. Look out for Shanola Hampton, known for her roles in NBC’s “Found” and Showtime’s “Shameless.” You’ll also see Margaret Anne Florence, a College of Charleston graduate and actress, along with Melissa Faliveno, author of the celebrated book “Tomboyland.” Not to mention Deena Lang, a mental health advocate and humorist bringing her unique voice to the ensemble.
Tickets for this inspiring event range from $60 to $350, and there are even livestream tickets available for those who cannot attend in person. Keep in mind that the show contains strong language and mature content, making it appropriate for audiences aged 13 and older.
With sponsorship from Alloy Women’s Health and support from various women’s networks and organizations focusing on mental health, this event promises to be a warm and welcoming celebration of womanhood. Don’t miss your chance to witness this remarkable gathering in Charleston!
