Hey there, Charleston food lovers! We’ve got some bittersweet news from the heart of our culinary scene. Makan, the African-Malaysian restaurant that has been turning heads and tantalizing taste buds since its opening in June, is set to close its doors after just a few short months of service. Chef and owner James Wozniuk announced that December 21st will mark the last day for diners to enjoy his innovative dishes at the charming location on Rutledge Avenue.
If you haven’t yet dined at Makan, let me tell you a little about what you’ve been missing. Inspired by a wonderful blend of culinary traditions from India, Thailand, China, and Britain, Makan offers a unique look at Malaysian cuisine, which often flies under the radar for many of us here in Charleston. From delectable char siu wings to deliciously spiced chili pan mee to the street-food staple char kuey teow, Wozniuk has worked hard to serve authentic and compelling food that reflects the vibrancy of Malaysia.
Wozniuk’s love for Malaysian cuisine blossomed during a 16-hour layover in Kuala Lumpur. His original Makan in Washington, D.C. gained a spot in the prestigious Michelin guide, and the chef hoped to replicate that success when he returned to his home state of South Carolina. But, as it turns out, Charleston diners have been a tougher crowd to crack.
Despite the terrific feedback from patrons who did stop by, the numbers simply didn’t add up to keep the restaurant afloat. Wozniuk, like many bold chefs, took the plunge into unfamiliar culinary territory, but he found it surprisingly challenging to convince diners to embrace the exciting flavors on offer. “It’s just very disappointing,” Wozniuk admitted, sharing his struggles with customer turnout. “We tried really hard and really wish it would have worked out.”
Now, if you’ve been keeping a close eye on the Charleston food landscape, this news might sound familiar. Just before Makan’s announced closure, the innovative restaurant Bearcat made headlines for shutting down as well, also citing challenges in attracting a steady stream of guests. It seems that despite Charleston being a food lover’s paradise, some unique offerings still find it tough to thrive.
The closing of Makan not only marks the end of a restaurant that celebrated the complex flavors of Malaysian cuisine but also serves as a reminder of the obstacles faced by newcomers in our bustling dining scene. Could it be that the local palate isn’t quite ready for such bold culinary adventures? Only time will tell.
As Wozniuk prepares to serve his last customers, he is also exploring options for the future of the former Goulette space, hoping to either sell the lease or find a new direction to continue his culinary journey. With his rich background and experience, there’s no doubt that this talented chef will continue to leave his mark on the culinary world, even if that means venturing beyond the boundaries of our sweet Charleston.
So, if you’ve been meaning to dig into that char kuey teow or try the fried potatoes one last time, now’s your chance! Let’s show our support for this culinary gem and give it the farewell it deserves!
Stay tuned for more updates on the latest food happenings around town. Until then, happy dining!
