Mail Theft Investigation Underway in Mount Pleasant’s Rivertowne

The local authorities in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, are currently investigating a reported case of mail theft. The incident occurred last week in the Rivertowne community, specifically the Carolina Isle subdivision.

Early Morning Theft

The larceny took place in the early hours of Monday, May 20. The homeowner reported to the police that she observed, on her Ring door camera, a red Honda Civic driving up to her mailbox and removing mail from it around 5:12 a.m.. At the time of the incident, the flag on her mailbox was up which indicated the presence of outgoing mail.

Vigilance of the Homeowner and the Unable Search

The woman, displaying prudence, had installed a Ring door camera at her home. The camera captured footage of the incident which was later handed over to the police. Upon review, an officer confirmed the homeowner’s account: a red four-door sedan, featuring black trim around the windows, was shown pulling up to the mailbox and someone in it removed the mail.

Despite the detailed description and the immediate notice, the local police authorities were unable to locate the vehicle after patrolling the neighborhood, suggesting that the thief might have left the area shortly after committing the crime.

Continuing Investigation

The Mount Pleasant Police Department continues to investigate the mail theft incident. No further details of the incident have been released as of writing as the authorities are still piling up additional evidence, and any potential suspect remains at large. Local residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to the incident to the Mount Pleasant Police Department.

Surge in Mail Theft Incidents

This isn’t the first time a mail theft case has been reported in the area. The police records indicate an increasing trend of mail theft in recent years. These types of crimes are often linked to identity theft and financial fraud, as thieves can find valuable information in personal letters, bills, checks, and other confidential mail.

Advisory to the Public

In light of this incident, residents are advised to retrieve their mail promptly after delivery, avoid sending cash or sensitive information through mail, and consider investing in security measures like motion sensor lighting, secure mailboxes, or video doorbell cameras for additional protection.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department also encourages residents to report suspicious activity or mail theft immediately to assist with their investigations and potentially prevent future incidents from occurring.
