Charleston, known for its rich history and vibrant culture, is also home to a quintessential Lowcountry brand that is making waves in the fashion industry. Say hello to Brackish, a unique company that beautifully blends fashion, beauty, and love for the natural environment. It all started back in 2007 in a cozy apartment on Rutledge Avenue, where co-founder Ben Ross sparked the idea after creating turkey feather bow ties for his groomsmen. Alongside fellow co-founder Jeff Plotner, they transformed a simple gift into a thriving business.
The journey of Brackish took a monumental leap in 2019 with the launch of their women’s collection, showcasing the duo’s dedication to capturing the beauty found in nature. “From the very beginning, we’ve been laser-focused on our mission to create a best-in-class brand known for our superior craftsmanship,” said Jeff. Their commitment to quality and nature’s artistry is evident, and there are exciting plans in store for the future. Jeff hinted at a big evolution coming in 2025 as the brand expands into several new categories. “We’re growing, and I can confidently say our customers are going to love what we’ve got in the works at the start of the new year,” he added.
Ben couldn’t resist sharing a bit more on their upcoming products: “We’re adding new belts in some really great silhouettes this fall, specifically for women.” It looks like Brackish is set to make fashion even more exciting for its customers!
One of the most thrilling aspects of Brackish’s journey is seeing their creations worn by celebrities. “Honestly, I feel humbled and flattered,” Jeff expressed. “It gives me goosebumps every time I see a customer wearing a piece we’ve created right here in Charleston out in the wild.” For those curious, Jeff admitted that he dreams of seeing Matthew McConaughey wear one of their pieces, especially one inspired by The University of Texas, Austin.
Ben echoed these sentiments, sharing that he still gets butterflies whenever someone wears one of their creations. He makes it a point to personally thank customers when he gets the chance, reflecting the genuine connection Brackish has with its supporters.
This football season, Brackish has introduced a collegiate collection that features not only Texas-inspired pieces but also options for local fans. “I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that we also have Clemson-inspired and Gamecock-inspired pieces available too,” Jeff stated, highlighting their aim to cater to football enthusiasts in the community. It’s all about keeping that local flavor alive, one bow tie at a time!
At Brackish, every detail matters. “We put our heart and soul into what we do; every single detail has been poured over,” shared Ben. They take pride in the fact that all of their feather pieces are made right in Charleston, thanks in large part to the incredibly talented artisans on their team. “They are our secret sauce,” he added with a smile.
When it comes to enjoying the charm of Charleston outside of work, both Jeff and Ben have their go-to spots. Jeff, who is busy raising three young boys, loves to hit up local dining spots like Lowland or Chubby Fish for date nights with his wife. Ben’s list is a little more extensive, stating, “Honestly, everywhere! If I’m picking, we’re headed to Hanks, Fig, Halls, or Glass Onion.” It’s clear that amid the hustle and bustle of running Brackish, they both make time to savor what Charleston has to offer.
As Brackish continues to grow, it remains dedicated to its core mission of intertwining nature’s beauty with innovative fashion. Their upcoming collections and commitment to quality craftsmanship ensure that this homegrown brand has a bright future ahead. Buckle up, fashion lovers—Brackish is just getting started!
