Charleston is buzzing with excitement as a new local prosecco brand, Don Luchi, captures the hearts and taste buds of both residents and visitors. Combining the elegance of Italian winemaking with Charleston’s celebratory vibe, the founders have taken their love for bubbly to the next level.
The journey began when one of the founders, Jay, discovered that prosecco was anything but “cheap Champagne” as he had once thought. After a tasting session with friends, inspiration struck not just to create a new beer but a whole new brand of prosecco. “We were like, ‘Let’s pivot if the beer doesn’t work out.’ And here we are!” he says.
When they launched Don Luchi in July, tickets for their launch event sold out in just two hours without anyone even having tasted the prosecco yet! “We were shocked,” Jay recalls. “We thought we would do well, but to have 3,000 bottles sold in just over three months blew us all away!” Despite initial concerns about the $26 price point, the bubbly quickly proved its worth. “We wanted to create a luxury product without breaking the bank,” he adds.
All three founders hail from the charming streets of Charleston, and it shows in their passion for creating a celebratory spirit in their products. “This city is all about gathering and celebrating life,” Jay explains. “We wanted to redefine what it means to bring something upscale to your Christmas gathering.”
In their quest for the perfect prosecco, the founders partnered with a vineyard in Valdobbiadene, Italy, renowned for its production of this sparkly delight. Jay noted a pivotal moment during a private tasting at his home when a level three sommelier declared, “That’s the one!” This type of attention to quality is evident with the prestigious DOCG designation on the bottle, signifying the highest level of quality for Italian wines.
Wondering how to savor Don Luchi? While mimosa lovers swear by mixing it with fruit juices, Jay insists it can stand alone, offering a refreshing taste with hints of apple, peach, and a touch of almond. “It’s extremely effervescent and easy on the palate!” he adds.
Locals are in luck, as Don Luchi is now available in over two dozen restaurants, liquor stores, and grocery shops throughout South Carolina. “We’re learning a lot about the alcohol laws, and we’re hoping to extend our reach to North Carolina and Georgia by spring,” Jay shares with excitement.
As the holiday season approaches, the founders are gearing up for some fun events. Mark your calendars for December 15, when they’ll host a public oyster roast in partnership with another local brand. Plus, they have plans for a special Christmas event that could give you a chance to win a dinner with the founders. Who wouldn’t want to break bread with the minds behind the bubbly?
With the Charleston waters sparkling and the bubbly flowing, Don Luchi is set to elevate your celebrations. Whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s, or just a sunny day, grab a bottle and toast to fine flavors and local creativity that’s shaking up the South!
