CHARLESTON, S.C. — A quiet night on one of Charleston’s bustling streets took a sudden turn as a late-night assault left two individuals injured. The incident occurred on December 14th, just past the stroke of midnight, and local police are on the hunt for the suspect involved.
According to the Charleston Police Department, officers were called to the scene at 1:28 a.m. after two men, covered in blood, were spotted by concerned bystanders near the intersection of King and Ann Streets. Upon arrival, police found Evan Frase and Wyatt Schmitt sitting on a corner right by the popular restaurant, Virginias on King.
Things were pretty grim as the officers assessed the situation. Frase was in a state of distress, showing signs of a serious injury, as his clothing was drenched in blood with a laceration on his abdomen. Emergency responders found him drifting in and out of consciousness, while others at the scene applied makeshift pressure with a shirt to control the bleeding.
Schmitt’s condition looked alarming too; he was completely covered in blood, most of which came from injuries on his head. Despite his multiple lacerations, he managed to stay alert and communicate with the responding officers. Both men were quickly rushed to a local hospital for critical care.
While recoiling from the incident, Schmitt shared a shocking account with the police while recovering at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He stated that he and his friends had witnessed a domestic dispute occurring across the street. In a brave attempt to intervene, Schmitt tried to separate the suspect from a woman involved. However, in a twist of fate, the suspect turned on him and Frase, leading to the violence that followed.
Surveillance footage in the area confirmed Schmitt’s version of events, giving police further clues about the unfolding drama that night.
Witnesses have provided police with a description of the suspect that may help in the investigation. The alleged assailant is described as a male standing at about 5’10”, sporting a maroon long-sleeve button-up shirt, with brown hair touching the ears—often referred to as a “dad bod.” He was reportedly seen arguing with a female who was approximately 5’5″ before the attack happened. She is also involved in the ongoing investigation.
The last known whereabouts of the suspect were southbound on King Street, where he disappeared after the altercation. Officers are now appealing to the community for any information that might lead to his capture.
As local authorities continue their investigation, anyone who might have seen or know something about this incident is strongly encouraged to step forward.
