Main thoroughfare River Road on Johns Island was temporarily closed on a recent Saturday evening following a single-vehicle car crash into an electrical pole, according to local authorities. Deputies from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the accident along with the St. John’s Fire District. The event promptly led to the closure of a portion of the well-trafficked road.
The vehicular accident occurred near the intersection of River Road and Starfish Drive. Reports from the scene classify the incident as a rollover with entrapment. The driver’s condition or extent of injuries have not been confirmed. The vehicle is said to have hit an electricity pole causing not only the vehicle damage but also necessitating the replacement of the crashed unit.
Berkeley Electric officials were summoned to the scene to replace the damaged electric pole and restore any affected power lines, creating a safer environment for local residents and traffic in the vicinity. Due to these efforts to manage the accident aftermath, River Road was shut down to facilitate the emergency services and utility workers. Police strongly advised the drivers to avoid the area and seek an alternate route.
After an extended closure that stretched into the early Sunday morning hours, River Road was finally reopened to traffic at around 6 a.m. The road is a vital link on Johns Island, and its closure had inevitably affected local as well as commuter traffic. With the clearance of the crash site and the reinstallment of the power pole, it was deemed safe for the roadway to resume regular operations.
Road incidents such as this one underline the importance of careful driving, particularly in areas where there are likely to be pedestrians or vital infrastructure like electrical poles. Accidents are not only dangerous for those involved but can also lead to significant disruptions and potential risks for the larger community. Further details about the condition of the driver involved in the crash and the events leading up to the accident are yet to be released by the authorities.
