Sponsor Our ArticlesJohns Island residents can look forward to a new aquatics and recreation center, made possible by a $70 million bond referendum that received overwhelming community support. The center will include a gymnasium, a swimming pool, and various recreational amenities aimed at enhancing local fitness and leisure opportunities. Construction is anticipated to begin within two years, addressing a longstanding need for more recreational facilities on the island.
The charming city of Charleston is gearing up for some fantastic news for residents of Johns Island! A brand new aquatics and recreation center is on the way, thanks to the enthusiastic backing of local voters who showed overwhelming support for a $70 million bond referendum. With more than 80% approval, the community has spoken, and the plans are underway to enhance recreational facilities in the area.
The new center will grace approximately 12 acres off Hay Road, conveniently situated near the busy intersection of Maybank Highway and Main Road. This prime location is right next to the existing Johns Island Park, making it an ideal spot for families, fitness enthusiasts, and anyone looking to enjoy some leisure time in the sun!
What can residents expect inside this exciting new facility? The aquatics and recreation center is set to feature a spacious gymnasium measuring between 20,000 and 30,000 square feet! Perfect for team sports, fitness classes, or just a good old workout. A 25-meter swimming pool will be available, allowing swimmers of all ages to dive in, train, or take part in leisurely swims. In addition to these fantastic amenities, the center will also have locker rooms, fitness rooms, multi-purpose spaces, a kitchen for those post-workout snacks, and offices for staff. It’s shaping up to be a true hub of activity for the island’s residents.
The city is already getting the ball rolling by seeking contractors who will oversee the project and help establish a budget. This is a significant step toward turning the exciting plans into reality. Construction is expected to kick off in about two years. While a design firm has been selected and will collaborate with a construction manager, details of the gym and pool designs are still in the works. But one thing’s for sure, this center is going to be a game changer for the community!
Council members, including those representing Johns Island, have highlighted the pressing need for this facility over the past decade. The population on the island has been rapidly increasing, but the availability of recreational venues has not kept pace. Currently, residents often find themselves driving at least 30 minutes to access swimming pools, with the nearest city pool located at Martin Luther King Jr. Pool on the East Side of the peninsula.
As it stands, Johns Island has only two city parks: the lovely Angel Oak Park, which lacks recreation facilities, and the namesake park featuring baseball fields and tennis courts. With this new center, residents will finally have local access to the recreational activities they need.
This multi-faceted project doesn’t stop with Johns Island alone. The successful bond initiative also includes plans for other parks across Charleston, such as new parks on Daniel Island and the Cainhoy peninsula, a recreation center on James Island, and valuable upgrades for existing parks.
Future community engagement initiatives will also allow residents to express their ideas and preferences. This is a wonderful opportunity for locals to voice what they want in terms of pool size, sports courts, inclusive playgrounds, and attractive green spaces. It’s all about creating a facility that truly meets the needs of the community.
And here’s another exciting tidbit – there are additional plans for more aquatic centers in West Ashley, as part of the same bond referendum initiatives. While it’s still unknown how the total $70 million will be divided among the various projects, one thing is clear: the city is committed to improving recreational spaces for all its residents.
So get ready, Johns Island! A world of fun, fitness, and community engagement is set to blossom right in your neighborhood. This new aquatics and recreation center promises to be a vibrant hub for everyone, and it’s just around the corner.
