Exciting New County Park Proposed to Enhance Water Access and Recreation in Johns Island

Exciting Developments for Johns Island Residents!

If you’re living in Johns Island, South Carolina, get ready for some thrilling news that could change your routine for the better! Charleston County Parks is working towards bringing more water access to our growing community, and they have their sights set on creating a new county park around the stunning Simmons Creek.

What’s the Plan?

The proposal involves investing a whopping $1.7 million in about 66 acres of land located just three miles north of the iconic Angel Oak. Currently owned by the Lowcountry Land Trust, this area has a prime location off Old Pond Road, backing up to Simmons Creek and providing access to the Stono River.

A Park for Everyone

According to Patty Newshutz, the Charleston County Parks Director of Planning and Development, residents in this area have been missing out. “They don’t really have access to a passive park,” she said, highlighting that there isn’t sufficient public access to the water. The plan isn’t about accommodating larger motorboats; instead, it aims to cater to smaller craft such as kayaks and stand-up paddleboards.

More Than Just Water Access

But wait, there’s more! This proposed park would not just be a serene spot for water sports; it is designed to be a haven for walking, hiking, and a variety of other recreational activities. Newshutz believes the land could serve as a beautiful destination for everyone, providing much-needed opportunities for enjoying nature.

A Local Fit

The beauty of this initiative is that it addresses a growing need in Johns Island. “It’s also in an area of Johns Island where we don’t really have a presence or any facilities,” Newshutz mentioned. With the ongoing growth, having a park that fits the needs of these residents is crucial.

Next Steps

For those eager to see this project come to life, there’s a bit of a wait ahead. While they hope to get the park officially approved in less than six months, it could take a few years before we see features like a dock and a parking lot added. The Charleston County Parks team is currently applying for greenbelt funds for this purchase, and it will soon be in front of the County Council for approval.

What’s in Store?

Once approved, this park isn’t just a financial investment; it comes with a conservation easement that allows for recreation while preserving natural resources. This could mean trails for hiking, fishing options, and various water-related activities that will bring the community together.

Community Benefits

By expanding water access and creating recreational opportunities, this new park could serve as an essential part of life on Johns Island. From families looking for a weekend outing to individuals seeking a peaceful spot to kayak, the futures of many locals could be positively impacted!

Stay Tuned!

As this conversation continues to unfold, residents should keep their ears open for updates on the County Council’s decision. It looks like the edge of the creek might just be the next hotspot for relaxation and recreation in Johns Island!
