In a significant move for the automotive sector, Isuzu North America Corporation has announced plans to invest approximately $280 million in a new truck assembly plant in Greenville County. This exciting development is set to create over 700 new jobs in the local community, enhancing economic prospects in the region.
The new facility will take shape in an expansive 1-million-square-foot building located on 200 acres of land on Augusta Road in Piedmont. Construction for this state-of-the-art assembly plant is expected to be completed by 2027, at which point operations will commence.
This plant will not only embody Isuzu’s continued expansion in the United States but will also manufacture a range of vehicles, including the N-Series Gas, N-Series Electric, and F-Series Diesel trucks. With an anticipated production capacity of up to 50,000 units annually, the facility is expected to bolster Isuzu’s presence in the commercial vehicle market.
The investment was further supported by the South Carolina Coordinating Council for Economic Development, which approved job development credits for the project. In addition, Greenville County has also received a substantial $7 million grant from the Council to assist with site preparation and the construction of the facility.
South Carolina has long been recognized as a premier destination for automotive manufacturing, with a thriving industry that boasts an economic impact exceeding $27 billion. The state’s automotive sector employs over 75,000 people and ranks first in tire manufacturing and exports, with a staggering 144,000 tires produced daily.
The automotive manufacturing presence in South Carolina began with the establishment of BMW in 1994, and it has continued to grow with other key players like Mercedes, Volvo, and an impressive network of 250 suppliers. Governor Henry McMaster has noted that Isuzu’s investment further reinforces the state’s reputation as a leading hub for the automotive industry.
The establishment of this new assembly plant will allow Isuzu to streamline its production-related operations. By consolidating its manufacturing under one roof, Isuzu aims to enhance operational efficiency and optimize its workflow. The facility is also designed to accommodate storage for all completed trucks on-site, eliminating the need for off-site logistics.
Having been involved in the commercial vehicle market in the U.S. and Canada since 1984, Isuzu is committed to expanding its operations and enhancing its service offerings. The latest fiscal year has already shown impressive sales figures, with record sales reaching 44,000 units sold.
With this investment, Isuzu North America Corporation is not just expanding its footprint; it is also making a strong statement about the future of commercial automotive manufacturing in South Carolina. The new plant not only promises job creation but also reflects the company’s confidence in the state’s skilled workforce and supportive business climate, paving the way for exciting new opportunities in the coming years.
