According to the official announcement, the grant comprises of $750,000 in unrestricted funding partnered with an additional $250,000 dedicated to strengthen the museum’s endowment. This substantial donation follows up on the previous $1.25 million gift from The Duke Endowment in 2020 that was made before the museum’s grand opening.
Increasing Popularity of the Museum
IAAM President and CEO, Tonya Matthews, acclaimed the generosity of The Duke Endowment, expressing that the $1 million donation represents a crucial turning point for the International African American Museum. Matthews noted that not only does this substantial donation exemplify the increasing popularity of the museum, it also invigorates the potential of future philanthropic activities.
Since opening its doors in June of 2023, the International African American Museum has had the privilege of welcoming over 135,000 visitors. The extensive variety of exhibitions and educational opportunities have helped it solidify its position as a significant cultural and historical destination in the south.
The Vital Role of Donations
Reflecting on this milestone, Matthews emphasized, “A museum’s first three years are critical to its development. These are the years when an institution’s foundation is solidified, and the way is paved for sustained success and broader impact.” She further noted that as the museum pursues its mission, the important role of substantial donations becomes unambiguously clear.
Matthews expressed that contributions of all sizes, from $25 to millions, are extremely vital. She highlighted, “The museum’s ability to reach its full potential hinges on continuous major investments from individuals, corporations, and foundations.”
The Duke Endowment’s Contributions
The grant from The Duke Endowment, combined with former donations, elevates the total contribution to the International African American Museum to a significant $2.25 million.
