On May 14, 2024, in a breakthrough announcement, renowned publisher Southern Living revealed the selection of Johns Island, South Carolina, as the site for its 2024 Idea House. The picturesque waterfront neighborhood of Kiawah River, the region’s premiere “agrihood,” has been selected as the location. The unveiling is a testament to the commitment and innovation of the local community in fusing modern living with traditional southern charm.
The novel ‘Idea House’ embodies the essence of the Lowcountry, showcasing a 4,400 square-foot farmhouse situated in the heart of the region’s first agrihood, Kiawah River. Agrihoods are planned communities designed around a working farm, integrating agriculture into residential neighborhoods. The house reflects a distinctive architecture that seamlessly blends with the environment, boasting outdoor living spaces set against the backdrop of stunning water views.
Emphasizing local collaborations, the ‘Idea House’ will incorporate the work of various Charleston-based creatives. Among them are Andrea Cayetano-Jefferson of Gullah Sweetgrass Baskets, renowned for her stunning coil baskets, and Rebecca Atwood, a renowned textile designer whose work brings depth and texture to the overall design.
Commenting on the prestigious recognition, Chris Drury, broker-in-charge at Kiawah River, expressed his honor and anticipation. He noted, “Southern Living is one of the South’s most iconic magazines, and to be chosen as the location for this cherished tradition is an honor. This year’s Idea House will exemplify all that Kiawah River has to offer, and we are looking forward to welcoming residents and guests come August.”
For years, the Southern Living Idea House program has inspired millions with its innovative and aesthetic home designs, décor ideas, and product recommendations. The 2024 Idea House promises to keep this tradition alive by featuring innovative shoppable experiences. These initiatives aim to provide visitors and readers with a distinctive opportunity to incorporate pieces of Lowcountry charm into their abodes.
Successful collaborations are at the heart of this project, with multiple partners contributing to the overall design and construction. The team includes builder Dillard-Jones, architect MHK Architecture, interior designer Allison Elebash Interiors, and landscape architect DesignWorks.
The unique Idea House will be open for public tours from August through December 2024, with ticket sales commencing in June. Additional details and insider glimpses of the house will be available on Southern Living.com and in the September 2024 issue of Southern Living, available on newsstands from August 23, 2024.
