Hey there, Charleston folks! We’ve got some weather news on the horizon as we prepare for what could be some exciting (and a bit worrisome) changes coming our way from the south. A tropical storm watch is currently in effect for parts of our beautiful South Carolina coast as Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida’s west coast.
According to the latest updates, Hurricane Milton is expected to hit Florida late Wednesday night into early Thursday morning as a strong category 4 hurricane. After making landfall, it’s likely to swoop across the peninsula and head back out into the Atlantic. Fortunately, weather experts suggest that Milton will steer mostly clear of South Carolina, but that doesn’t mean we’re entirely off the hook.
So, what should we be bracing for in the Charleston area? Folks can expect some gusty winds as Milton’s presence gets felt. Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Josh Marthers is reporting that while we won’t see direct hits, there will definitely be cloud cover, possible passing showers, and the potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
As for wind, we’re likely to feel some strong gusts beginning late Wednesday and lasting into Thursday. Additionally, coastal flooding is a real concern, especially with Thursday’s high tide expected to push water levels considerably. Marthers pointed out that we could see water levels rise to **eight feet in Charleston Harbor**, which would certainly lead to major flooding concerns, considering we often see street flooding when water hits around **seven feet**.
In light of this forecast, Charleston city officials have started rolling out their emergency plans. Preparations are well underway as they install pumps to help divert water from vulnerable spots, and barricades are being placed on roads that typically see water accumulation during high tides.
For residents looking for ways to protect their property, sandbag operations are set to kick off on Wednesday. You’ll be able to grab sandbags at various distribution sites across the peninsula, West Ashley, and James Island. This is a great opportunity for everyone to get prepared and minimize any potential flood damage.
If you’re worried about your car getting caught in rising waters, there’s good news! Five downtown parking garages will be opening for free parking. This way, your vehicle can stay safe while the storm passes through. Just keep in mind, this is only a temporary relief, and it’s still wise to keep an eye on local reports for any updates regarding the storm.
As we keep an eye on Hurricane Milton and its potential impacts, let’s all stay informed. Make sure to monitor weather updates and local advisories and check in on your neighbors, especially those who may need extra assistance during this time.
Charleston has seen its fair share of storms, and with a little preparation and community spirit, we can weather this one just fine. Remember to stay safe, Charleston, and keep those positive vibes flowing. We’ve got this!
