This weekend, North Charleston is sparking a wave of community spirit as two local organizations join forces to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene. It’s a heartwarming reminder that even in tough times, we can come together to lend a helping hand.
The event, dubbed the Light the Night Grocery Collection, kicks off on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Participants are invited to meet at 3366 Rivers Ave. Here, volunteers will receive bags to distribute in select neighborhoods. The idea is simple yet impactful: place the bags on porches, encouraging neighbors to fill them with non-perishable goods.
It’s a great way to engage with the community and make a real difference. Whether you have a can of soup, some pasta, or other items to spare, every little bit counts in this effort. By encouraging donations from neighbors, this initiative strives to create a network of support that extends beyond our individual homes.
As if the event wasn’t exciting enough, there are more plans for the Halloween festivities! On Halloween night, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., a truck will be stationed back at the same parking lot location to collect all the groceries that have been collected from the neighborhoods. It’s almost like a trick-or-treat for a good cause!
These contributions will be delivered straight to communities in western North Carolina, which are still feeling the effects of the hurricane. It’s a way to show that even though the storm may be over, our support continues on. The organizers are ensuring that every item collected finds its way to those who need it most.
Organizer Tony Lewis shared his thoughts on the motivation behind this meaningful initiative, stating, “That’s what God said, help your brothers and sisters. That’s what we are supposed to do, we are supposed to help each other. We are all on this Earth together.” His sentiment reflects the heart of the effort—an open invitation to join hands and help our neighbors during their time of need.
It’s so uplifting to witness communities banding together, especially in the face of adversity. Lewis emphasizes that once the groceries are collected that Halloween night, they will be taken to North Carolina right away. No time is wasted in making sure these goods reach those who are still navigating recovery.
If you’re in the North Charleston area this weekend or on Halloween, consider joining in on this impactful event. Whether you volunteer your time to help collect groceries or simply contribute some non-perishable items, your efforts can truly make a difference. This is a fantastic way to build community and bring a smile to those facing challenges ahead.
So, mark your calendars! This weekend, let’s show our strength as a community and come together to uplift those in need. Your participation could provide the comfort and support that some families desperately require. Remember, together we can challenge any storm and bring hope and light to our neighbors.
