Charleston, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as residents prepare for a heartfelt celebration honoring one of their own. On October 26th, the National Montford Point Marine Association Chapter 47 will host a special gala to present the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to the family of Montford Point Marine, Alonzo Harold Rouse. This important event will take place at Mark Clark Hall at the Citadel, starting at 6 p.m.
To understand the significance of this award, we have to look back at history. The Montford Point Marines were the first group of Black Americans allowed to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps. After President Franklin Roosevelt issued an executive order in June 1941, which established the Fair Employment Practices Commission, a new era of inclusion began. This marked the first-time Black men could serve in the Marines, changing the landscape of military service forever.
Fast forward to 2011, when President Barack Obama signed a law awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to the Montford Point Marines, recognizing their bravery and dedication during a time of racial segregation. The upcoming gala is not just a tribute to Sgt. Rouse, but also a celebration of the sacrifices made by countless others who served at Montford Point.
Alonzo Harold Rouse was a true local hero, born in the charming town of Mount Pleasant. He was not only a soldier but also a devoted fisherman and hunter who loved connecting with nature. An enterprising spirit, Rouse owned a successful chicken farm in the 1970s, demonstrating his entrepreneurial skills. He was also an active member of his community, serving as an usher at Goodwill AME Church.
Rouse enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1946, and his journey took him from Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, North Carolina, to serving in Guam and Korea. He was stationed at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, along with Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow in California. His life exemplified dedication, courage, and commitment both in and out of uniform.
The gala promises to be a memorable occasion, bringing together those who appreciate the sacrifices made by our service members. It serves as an opportunity for the Charleston community to come together in support of the Rouse family and to remember the incredible legacy of the Montford Point Marines.
Anyone wishing to attend this memorable evening can register for the event. It is a chance to join in the recognition of Alonzo Harold Rouse’s contributions to both his community and country. The evening will undoubtedly be filled with heartfelt stories and a deep appreciation for the life and service of a great man.
The upcoming gala on October 26th is so much more than an award ceremony. It’s a celebration of heroism, courage, and the enduring spirit of those who have fought for freedom against all odds. It honors Alonzo Harold Rouse, a Marine who dedicated his life to serving his country and community, ensuring that we remember the trailblazers who paved the way for future generations. So, mark your calendars and get ready to honor a true local hero in Charleston!
