Heart Math Tutoring Charleston Seeks Volunteer Tutors to Support Students During 2024-25 School Year

HMT needs 200 tutors to help over 180 students in CCSD schools

 Charleston, S.C. – August 10, 2024

Heart Math Tutoring (“Heart”) is a nonprofit organization committed to helping students in elementary schools develop a strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics. Entering its third year working with students in Charleston County School District, Heart will be serving students at four elementary schools: Charleston Progressive Academy, Ladson Elementary, Matilda F. Dunston Elementary, and Sanders-Clyde Elementary.

Urgent Need for Math Support in Charleston

Recent data shows that only 54% of fourth-grade students in Charleston County School District met or exceeded grade-level expectations on the 2023 SC College-and-Career-Ready Assessments[1]. With the academic challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, tutoring has proven to be a vital intervention. A 2021 report by the SC Education Oversight Committee highlights the significant gains tutoring can offer in addressing these gaps[2].

Make a Difference as a Heart Tutor

During the 2023-24 school year, 108 volunteers contributed 1,707 hours of one-on-one tutoring to Heart students in Charleston. As a result, 99% of these students met or exceeded their math growth goals, with nearly 90% of teachers reporting noticeable improvements in their students’ confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Additionally, 96% of Heart tutors rated their experience positively.

Heart volunteers commit to weekly tutoring sessions lasting 30 minutes to an hour from late September through April, amounting to roughly 20-25 sessions. No advanced math knowledge or prior tutoring experience is required—just a willingness to help students succeed. Heart provides a structured, activity-based curriculum and on-site support at every session, making it easy for anyone who can do basic math to get involved.

About Heart Math Tutoring

Heart Math Tutoring (HMT) is a nonprofit with a mission to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors. Community members commit one hour per week to deliver an effective, hands-on curriculum through one-on-one tutoring sessions during the school day in elementary schools. Heart focuses its support on students who lack resources to access private tutoring. Founded in Charlotte, NC, HMT launched its first new region, Charleston, SC, in 2022.
