MUSC Health University Medical Center, located in Charleston, South Carolina, is a university hospital affiliated with the Medical University of South Carolina.
The South Carolina General Assembly enacted a $4 million bill in 1946 to build a new teaching hospital under the administration of the Medical College of South Carolina. Construction began in 1951, and the Medical College of South Carolina Hospital was finished and dedicated on May 10, 1955, with its doors opened to its first patients on September 26, 1955. It was eventually renamed the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital (MUSC), and it is currently known as the MUSC Health University Medical Center.
The MUSC Health Transplant Center is ranked as one of the top ten kidney transplant centers in the US. The only HLA Laboratory in South Carolina supports the MUSC Health Transplant Center. MUSC Health University Medical Center is the regional referral center for South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
