Charleston, SC – A new wave of art exploration is coming to the city, as the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art prepares for the exclusive opening reception of two compelling exhibitions, “Teach Me a Song” by Elisa Harkins and “Meshes of Resistance” by Spandita Malik.

Scheduled for Friday, April 5, at 6:30 PM, the event seeks to bridge the gap between the artistic avant-garde and community engagement. The event will be open to all College of Charleston students, faculty, staff, and current Halsey Institute members, who will enjoy free admission. For the general public, a suggested donation of $5 at the door is appreciated.

“Teach Me a Song” by Elisa Harkins

Elisa Harkins is an acclaimed artist whose work navigates the realms of multimedia, installation, and performance. Her exhibition, “Teach Me a Song,” seeks to connect cultures and generations. Harkins’ work is a profound exploration of intersectionality, often blending Native American music, language, and dance traditions with multimedia elements to create a thought-provoking dialogue about identity and culture. “Teach Me a Song” showcases the artist’s exploration of her own Native American heritage through contemporary mediums, creating a unique dialog between traditions and technology.

“Meshes of Resistance” by Spandita Malik

Through her series “Meshes of Resistance,” Spandita Malik seeks to shed light on the women’s rights movement in India. Malik’s photography delves into stories of resilience and strength, obscured by socio-political tensions. Her work sensitively addresses ongoing threats to the agency and autonomy of women, all while celebrating their unique cultural identity and indomitable spirit. “Meshes of Resistance” upholds the global conversation around gender equality, offering beautiful, complex depictions of women transcending societal norms to exist boldly and proudly.
