Nestled at 250 North Church Street, the site has been vacant since the demolition of the famed Greenville Memorial Auditorium in 1997. This long-awaited development marks a significant milestone for a piece of land that has seen its fair share of failed plans over the decades.
Once completed, the towering structure could become the tallest building in South Carolina, casting a distinctive profile against Greenville’s skyline. The Gateway Project has received a warm welcome from the community, showcasing exciting prospects for increased housing and job opportunities in the area.
Greenville’s Design and Review Board gave the green light to the project’s lighting and landscaping plans in December 2024, paving the way for a new era for downtown Greenville. This approval includes a well-thought-out design featuring various types of lighting and lush landscaping plans anchored by eight species of trees, including magnificent magnolias and sturdy oaks, along with seven styles of shrubs to beautify the surroundings.
The ambitious project will encompass 342 apartments, providing much-needed housing solutions, alongside 12,000 square feet of commercial space. The completion of the Gateway Project is expected to challenge Columbia’s Capitol Center for the title of the tallest building in South Carolina. The Capitol Center, standing at 349 feet, has held this title since its construction in 1987. Other notable tall buildings in the state include Margate Tower at 329 feet and The Hub at Columbia at 325 feet.
The project is keen on improving connectivity to nearby attractions such as the Wellness Arena and the *vibrant downtown area*.
