Exciting Developments in Goose Creek, South Carolina!

Goose Creek is buzzing with some fantastic news for the local economy and the booming shipbuilding industry! HII, the nation’s largest military shipbuilder, has just announced their plan to acquire W International SC LLC and Vivid Empire SC LLC, two key players in the metal fabrication field, specializing in crafting essential parts for ships. This acquisition is set to significantly support U.S. Navy nuclear submarine programs.

A Strategic Move for HII

According to a recent announcement, HII is stepping forward with a definitive agreement to purchase virtually all the assets of this South Carolina-based complex metal fabricator known as W International. With their main facility situated in Goose Creek, this operation will seamlessly integrate into HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. This is great news not only for the business itself but also for the local workforce!

The 45-acre facility boasts more than 480,000 square feet of advanced manufacturing space, complete with cutting-edge equipment and infrastructure. With its strategic location near Charleston and barge and rail access, W International is perfectly positioned to enhance shipbuilding capabilities in the area. Chris Kastner, the HII President and CEO, has expressed a clear commitment, saying, “HII is committed to increasing build rates for our Navy customer, and this investment in capacity alongside the Navy will help us do that.”

The Local Benefit

This acquisition means much more than just numbers and facilities. It signifies a commitment to providing jobs and retaining the existing workforce. Under the agreement, nearly all current employees at W International will be offered jobs to continue their work in the integration of shipbuilding structure and modules. This should come as a relief to the skilled employees who bring so much expertise to the table.

Once the deal is finalized—expected to close soon in the fourth quarter of 2024—HII will rebrand the Goose Creek facility to Newport News Shipbuilding – Charleston Operations. This change reflects the larger mission HII has for their growing operations in South Carolina. Local resident and Vice President of NNS, Matt Needy, will take over as general manager of the new site.

Supporting U.S. Navy Programs

The plans for this site extend far beyond just manufacturing. The facility will play a vital role in constructing nuclear-powered submarine and aircraft carrier modules and structures, providing essential support for U.S. Navy’s programs. This places South Carolina firmly on the map as a powerhouse in the shipbuilding industry.

A Bright Future Ahead

As the acquisition unfolds, there is a palpable excitement around the potential increase in production capabilities. HII is gearing up to maintain a top-tier standard of shipbuilding so that they can meet the demands and expectations of the Navy. This investment will help them efficiently add trained talent to push forward with crucial shipbuilding efforts, such as those related to the AUKUS agreement, which involves collaboration on defense and security projects with allies.

The significance of this development cannot be overstated. It not only strengthens the capabilities of HII but also reinforces the local economy, providing jobs and enhancing the skill set of the workforce within Goose Creek and the broader Charleston area.

As we keep an eye on this story, one thing is clear: the shipbuilding community here is in for some exciting times ahead! With commitments like this, Goose Creek is set to become even more integral to the nation’s military readiness in the years to come. Stay tuned for more updates on this fascinating journey!
