Celebrating a Local Legend: George Kenny to Receive Tip of the Hat Award at Charleston Jazz Gala

Celebrating a Local Legend: George Kenny Honored at Charleston Jazz Gala

Charleston, S.C. – In a city known for its rich musical history, there’s one name that resonates deeply within the hearts of many: George Kenny. With a remarkable career spanning over 70 years, this 92-year-old performer, educator, and mentor is finally getting the spotlight he truly deserves. On Friday, October 23rd, the Charleston Jazz Gala will honor Uncle George with the Tip of the Hat Award, celebrating his invaluable contributions to Charleston’s vibrant jazz scene.

A Journey Through Music

Uncle George, as he is fondly referred to by family, friends, and students alike, has dedicated his life to the power of music. His journey began as a young boy, inspired by the sounds of the Jacob’s Orphanage Band as they played on Calhoun and King Streets. “I remember my mom telling me I would walk around the yard with toilet paper rolls until my dad surprised me with a trumpet from the pawn shop,” he shared with a warm smile, reminiscing about those early days.

While he had high hopes of going to college after graduating from Burk High School, Uncle George’s dreams took a backseat to family responsibilities. “My sister was right behind me, and I didn’t think my parents could afford it, so I decided to join the Air Force instead,” he explained. His remarkable talent soon landed him a place in the US Air Force Band, where he continued to pursue his passion for music, forming bands at various military bases.

From Service to Stage

After four years in service, Uncle George returned home to further his education at South Carolina State College. Here, he continued to hone his craft, eventually leading a jazz band known as The Collegian. Armed with a degree and endless enthusiasm, he returned to Charleston and played a vital role in developing the music program at CA Brown High School, ensuring that future generations would also have the opportunity to experience the joy of music.

Throughout his illustrious career, Uncle George has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in music history. “I’ve played with just about everybody in town,” he beamed proudly. His performances have graced major hotels and resorts up and down the coast, and he has even enjoyed the thrill of playing alongside legends like Lou Rawls and Dizzy Gillespie.

More Than Just a Musician

Beyond his musical talent, Uncle George is a beloved figure in the community. He was not just a performer, but also a mentor whose influence touched countless students. People often describe him as the ultimate sideman, whose dedication to support others in their musical journeys is what truly sets him apart. “I never wanted to lead a band; I just wanted to be a good sideman,” he humbly stated, exemplifying his selfless nature.

Though Uncle George faced life’s ups and downs, including the heartbreaking loss of his beloved wife, Betty Kenny, in 2020 after 65 wonderful years together, his passion for music remains steadfast. He still rehearses with the Melody Chimes Choir at his cherished Calvary Episcopal Church in Charleston, continuing to spread joy through each note he plays.

A Night to Remember

As the Charleston Jazz Gala approaches, excitement is building among family, friends, and fellow musicians. This celebration is not just a recognition of Uncle George’s accomplishments; it’s a heartfelt tribute to a man who has poured his life’s work into his craft and the community. “I’m just grateful to still be making music,” he said, eagerly anticipating the evening where he will be honored for his enduring legacy.

This event promises to be a night filled with music, memories, and lots of love—everything that Uncle George stands for. Here’s to celebrating a true legend in our city of Charleston!
