CHARLESTON, S.C. — In a recent development at the Global Water Center, co-founder Dr. George Greene has transitioned from serving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to taking up new responsibilities as the Executive Chair of the Board of Directors. This significant transition saw the unanimous election of Thomas (TJ) Johnston, the former Chief Operations Officer (COO), as the organization’s new CEO.
Johnston expressed honour in being chosen to step into the role of CEO of Global Water Center. He commended the organisation’s leadership team, and emphasized the shared dedication towards their shared mission of ending global water poverty.
Since his inception as the COO of Global Water Center, Johnston proved instrumental in expanding the non-profit organization’s team from merely four to 15 dedicated employees. Under his leadership, numerous respected leaders from the water sector have joined their noble cause.
Johnston brings onboard a rich professional background, having amassed varied leadership experience. His portfolio ranges from being an environmental lawyer to setting up a non-profit organization in Haiti, to serving as an Anglican Bishop.
Following a highly recognised career of over 25 years working to solve the global water crisis, as co-founder and former CEO of both Water Mission and Global Water Center, Dr. Greene shared his strong support for Johnston in this transition. He emphasised on Johnston’s leadership and team-building skills being essential to the Global Water Center’s mission.
Johnston also expressed his anticipation towards the Global Water Center’s bold dreams and planned initiatives for 2024. He cited new trainings, relationship forging, and leveraging technology to bring safe water to rural communities in Hondura, Ghana, India, Zanzibar and beyond.
“I see a movement of leaders transforming the rural water sector,” Johnston continued. “I see a movement that will not stop until it brings safely managed water to everyone, everywhere.”
Global Water Center holds steadfast in its belief that everyone deserves access to safely managed water. The organization is dedicated to providing education, fostering innovation, and encouraging collaboration to maintain the safety and longevity of rural water sources. Recognized as the premier resource for the rural water sector, their safe water education courses have impacted individuals across 81 countries.
In addition to education, Global Water Center also empowers water projects with innovative technology to ensure their effectiveness and reliability. The organization roots all its efforts in collaboration with other non-profits, governments, and other entities, with the shared goal of solving the global water crisis.
