Exciting Urban Entitlement Funding Now Available for Charleston County Communities

Exciting Funding Opportunity for Charleston County!

Charleston County, S.C., is buzzing with news that could significantly benefit local communities! Urban Entitlement funds are up for grabs, and the county is still accepting applications. It’s a fantastic opportunity for various organizations, including governmental, community, neighborhood, faith-based, or nonprofit groups to apply for funding that can truly make a difference.

What’s the Deal with the Funding?

So, here’s the scoop! The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocates this annual funding, and it’s something that Charleston County wants everyone to know about. The funding isn’t just for big organizations either! If you run a small community program or a faith-based initiative, you can still apply! The main goal? To address the needs of low-to-moderate individuals in our community.

LoElla Smalls, the county’s Director of Community Development and Revitalization, is passionate about providing essential information to residents and potential applicants. During December, she and her team are attending town council meetings to explain the application process and provide background on the funding. “If you think this is going to be a quick turnaround, the funding for this year will actually be available in September,” she explains, making it clear that though the process may take some time, it’s worth it in the long run.

Community Input Matters!

What’s really cool about these funds is that the community gets a voice in how the money is spent. The goals of the funds were decided by residents during the community engagement process in 2021, as part of the Five-Year Consolidated Plan. Smalls noted, “We go out into the community to find out what the community sees as the highest needs.” Residents were asked essential questions regarding their needs—Do you need more after-school programs? What about repairs for homes? Or perhaps legal assistance?

Some objectives for the years 2021 to 2025 include Affordable Housing and Suitable Living Options, Building Self-Sufficiency & Sustainability, Infrastructure and Community Improvements, and Homeless Needs. It’s clear that the county is focused on touching lives and improving living conditions for all residents.

Local Leaders Rallying Support

Miles especially highlighted the importance of helping senior citizens, who can often be forgotten. “If we get a fraction of the estimated amount of funds, it’s a starting point,” he stated, recognizing that even a small amount could create significant impacts. “That’s a true statement, yes, it’s going to be divided among other towns, but guess what, something is better than nothing!”

Deadline to Apply

Sounds great, right? However, if you’re considering applying, put a reminder on your calendar! The deadline to submit applications is January 6, 2025. Ensure you prepare all necessary paperwork to shout your organization’s goals and needs from the rooftops!

To access the application and more detailed information about the funding opportunity, you can head over to the Charleston County website. This could be your chance to secure essential funds that can make a real difference in the community!

As this funding opportunity unfolds, it’s clear that Charleston County is committed to uplifting those in need and creating a better tomorrow! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for all the passionate organizations ready to make positive changes!
