Authorities in Florida have sought assistance from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office in the attempt to crack a near 30-year-old cold case. A body, discovered on October 7, 1995, continues to baffle investigators as they strive to unravel the mystery.

The Victim’s Discovery

The deceased woman was discovered by deputies of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. She was found floating in the waters near York Island, situated off Pine Island’s southern tip. Indications related to her clothing suggest connections to the Charleston region of South Carolina.

Identifying Features and Personal Artifacts

Investigators detailed that the woman was wearing a V-neck pullover scrub shirt colored maroon or red. Stitched on the back were the words “Charleston S.C. V.A. Hospital”. Other notable items worn by the woman included a yellow metal ring that featured a 2mm ivory-colored stone, a lightweight metal bracelet, and a white metal watch on her left wrist.

Findings from Genetic Testing

The woman is speculated to have hailed from South Carolina, and this belief was corroborated through the results of DNA genealogical testing conducted. The results traced the woman to 11 counties within South Carolina, including Charleston County, suggesting possible roots within these areas.

Physical Details and Health History

The FBI informational flyer shared various physical and historical aspects related to the woman. These included her likelihood of being a smoker, evidences of bone fractures from the past, surgical screws in her right ankle, and indications of cranial surgery on her left skull. Investigators estimate her to be between the ages of 30 and 50 years, measuring between 5-foot 2-inches and 5-foot 4-inches and weighing approximately 130 pounds. She had shoulder-length brown/red hair.

Call for Public Assistance

Efforts to identify the woman are ongoing, and with leads and potential clues in hand, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to the public for assistance.
