Charleston Celebrates 20 Years of Fleet Landing: A Harbor Tradition

Charleston, known for its rich history and scrumptious seafood, has another reason to toast—Fleet Landing Restaurant & Bar is marking its 20th anniversary! Located at 186 Concord St., this beloved eatery, housed in a charming 1940s-era naval building, is more than just a restaurant; it’s a delightful hub for both locals and tourists alike.

A Blast from the Past

Fleet Landing first opened its doors in November 2004. Its striking location on the east side of the Charleston peninsula means diners can enjoy stunning views of the harbor while indulging in some of the best seafood in the area. The cozy atmosphere inside the restaurant buzzes with excitement as families and friends gather to enjoy their meals. The sound of chatter bounces off the walls of this historic building, where the staff has dedicated nearly two decades to serving unforgettable meals.

All About the Food

In 2023, Fleet Landing expanded its offerings by adding a delightful oyster bar. Shucks, yes! Now guests can savor fresh oysters sourced from British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, and right from South Carolina. The scene is visually appealing as these delicacies rest on ice at a raw bar lined with cheerful blue stools. The mouth-watering aromas wafting through the air—from gumbo to fried flounder, red rice, and crab cakes—make it impossible not to feel excited about dining here.

A Family Affair

The Newton family—owners Weesie and Tradd—have poured their hearts and souls into Fleet Landing since its inception. Their journey wasn’t without bumps; after initially losing out on the chance to create their restaurant, they were overjoyed to learn that the opportunity had come back to them just months later. “It was a big leap of faith for sure,” Weesie recalls. They were determined to maintain the building’s original charm while making it a beacon of delicious food and warm service.

Steadfast Amidst Change

As Charleston continues to evolve, Fleet Landing has stood the test of time. Surrounded by new hotels and ongoing developments—like the soon-to-open The Cooper—the restaurant may be a bit less visible nowadays, but it remains fiercely popular. Despite being tucked away behind construction barriers, they’re seeing packed tables and eager diners lining up for a taste of their acclaimed dishes. Weesie acknowledges the challenges posed by decreased visibility and parking but remains optimistic. “The development is going to be great ultimately,” she adds.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

Not only did Fleet Landing extend its lease through 2049, but the Newtons have also emphasized that the heart of the restaurant lies in its people. Their dedicated staff continues to provide exceptional service, creating a family-like atmosphere that keeps both guests and employees returning.

What’s Next for Fleet Landing?

So, what can we expect in the future? Plans for the nearby Union Pier—a 65-acre waterfront property—are still unfolding, but the Newtons are confident that their loyal clientele will keep flocking to Fleet Landing. They believe that even with new restaurants cropping up, Fleet Landing’s unique charm, style, and dedication to serving fresh seafood will keep it firmly at the top of must-visit lists.
