Feds Launch Investigation into North Charleston USPS Facility

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has reportedly started an investigation into a United States Postal Service (USPS) facility based in North Charleston. The inquiry follows complaints of unfair labor practices at the USPS Cross County Road location. These claims have been brought forward by the American Postal Workers Union.

Allegations Against the USPS

The accusations against the USPS suggest that it breached Section 8(a)(5) of the National Labor Relations Act in the past six months. As per the NLRB, this section prohibits an employer from refusing to participate in collective bargaining with the representatives of its employees. The specific charges against the USPS imply the organization failed to conduct good-faith bargaining with its staff.

According to case filings, the USPS supposedly denied providing information requested by the union. The union maintains that it had asked for clock ring records, a document outlining an employee’s working hours; however, this request, made on June 9, was allegedly declined on June 30.

The USPS Responds

Despite the allegations, the USPS has refrained from public comment on this case, citing their policy against discussing pending actions. As a burgeoning issue, the investigation remains ongoing, awaiting possible further episodes.

A Series of Investigations Across South Carolina

The North Charleston USPS facility investigation is not an isolated event. Over the past two months, eight other USPS facilities scattered throughout South Carolina have come under NLRB scrutiny, as stated in NLRB records. The charges levied across these facilities echo a similar tone, mainly accusing the USPS facilities of denying workers their rights to fair representation and refusal to engage in bargaining with employees.

This surge of cases against USPS facilities presents a challenge to the USPS. It raises questions about labor practices within the organization, necessitating a thorough look at the USPS’ labor policies, and calls for prompt and fair actions to resolve the issue.
