CHARLESTON, S.C. – A Lowcountry family has filed a lawsuit against the Charleston County School District, Dorchester County School District Two, and Event Staff Services following an alleged incident at a basketball game.
The lawsuit, filed by the family of an Ashley Ridge High School student, claims that during a basketball game at Stall High School on Jan. 24, 2023, students from Stall High School violently attacked the Ashley Ridge team.
According to court documents, both school districts were aware of the potential for violence and had contracted Event Staff Services to provide security at the game. However, the lawsuit alleges that the security measures were inadequate, leading to the alleged attack.
The lawsuit states that the Ashley Ridge student and her teammates were brutally assaulted by a large group of Stall students, resulting in the student sustaining significant injuries, particularly to the head and neck area. The student incurred substantial medical costs as a result of the attack.
Dorchester County School District Two declined to comment on the pending litigation, while the Charleston County School District stated that their legal counsel is reviewing the lawsuit and may comment on the issues at a later date if necessary.
The lawsuit accuses the Charleston County School District of failing to provide adequate security at the game and alleges that Dorchester County School District Two did not properly supervise and protect the students. The family is seeking compensation for the damages suffered.
The incident has raised questions about the responsibility of school districts to ensure the safety of students at athletic events and the need for comprehensive security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
