Exciting New Wedding Venue Set to Open in Charleston’s Eastside Neighborhood

Charleston, S.C. is abuzz with fresh news as an innovative hospitality group takes aim at transforming an old brewery into a stunning wedding venue right in the heart of the Eastside neighborhood. Uptown Hospitality Group is looking to convert the now-closed Baker and Brewer restaurant and brewery located at 94 Stuart Street into an enchanting space known as The Waverly.

A Perfect Location for Celebrations

Co-founder Keith Benjamin expresses excitement about this new venture, noting that adding a venue to their existing portfolio, which already includes several fantastic restaurants and bars downtown, feels like a natural next step. “We love the location, just at the foot of the bridge, right in the middle of the peninsula,” Benjamin emphasizes. “You really can’t go wrong here. It has the bones necessary and offers a great indoor-outdoor space. It’s really a blank canvas for us.”

Engaging with the Community

As part of their planning process, Uptown Hospitality is actively engaging with the local community to ensure the venue aligns well with the Eastside residents’ needs. They’re currently navigating through some zoning requests to bring The Waverly to life, and so far, things are looking positive. The board of zoning appeals has recommended approval for their late-night noise request, but with specific conditions to consider.

Understanding Noise Regulations

In response to the city’s noise ordinance, which restricts music and loud sounds near residential areas, The Waverly venue has asked for “late-night event status.” This will enable them to play music outdoors within 500 feet of housing, but with parameters in place. The appeal board suggests that live music can continue outdoors until 10 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It looks like they are all set for an atmosphere that respects neighbors while ensuring guests have a memorable experience!

A Collaborative Spirit

Benjamin shared some heartening news about their community interactions, stating, “We’ve had phenomenal conversations with the Eastside Community. We had two opportunities to meet with their neighborhood association and got to collaborate with Councilman Mitchell, who has been completely supportive of this project.” Even the pastor of the nearby Greater Refuge Temple has shown support. This collaborative spirit shows that Uptown Hospitality Group is committed to being a positive addition to the neighborhood.

Addressing a Local Demand

Benjamin points out an interesting reality—although there are plenty of wedding and event venues, “there are not many on the peninsula.” The Waverly Event Space promises to fill that gap by offering a sizable venue surrounded by hotels and restaurants, ideal for couples looking to celebrate their love in a vibrant location. Benjamin shares his enthusiasm, noting that they look forward to creating a space that fits seamlessly within the Charleston landscape.

Future Plans and Bookings

The Waverly Event Space is currently under construction, and things are moving fast! They are already taking bookings for 2025, which is quite impressive. This proactive approach means that engaged couples won’t have to wait too long before they can start planning their dream wedding in one of Charleston’s newest venues.

With a strategic location, community support, and a clear vision for creating memorable celebrations, The Waverly is certainly shaping up to be a fantastic addition to Charleston’s vibrant wedding scene. Stay tuned as this exciting project develops!
