Exciting Times Ahead for Theatre Lovers in Charleston!
Charleston, get ready for a thrilling ride into the world of theatre! The College of Charleston’s Department of Theatre and Dance is all set to roll out its 2024-25 season, and guess what? The theme this year is “Old is New Again”! This season will feature eight exciting productions that breathe new life into the past. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Janine McCabe, audiences can expect a fresh take on beloved stories, innovative approaches, and a celebration of artistic talents, all happening in the recently renovated Simons Center.
A New Home for Creativity
After a few years of adapting to changing circumstances, the department is thrilled to come back together in one location. McCabe enthusiastically shared, “Our sense of community is re-invigorated after years of adaptation.” The updated Simons Center for the Arts now boasts a state-of-the-art Black Box Theatre, where many of the performances will take place. This intimate venue is designed to enhance the theatrical experience, making it the perfect spot for this season’s productions.
Celebrating Culture with MOJA Arts Festival
The opening shows can’t get here soon enough! The first two productions, Home and The Drama of King Shotaway, will kick off in collaboration with the City of Charleston’s MOJA Arts Festival. This multidisciplinary festival is known for highlighting Black arts and culture, as well as the rich contributions of African American and Caribbean heritage. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the festival, and the inclusion of these impactful works makes it even more special!
Explore the World of Home
Directed by Gary Dewitt Marshall, the play Home tells the touching story of Cephus Miles, a young farmhand whose journey leads him to seek out a better life. After experiencing a series of challenges, Cephus dreams of leaving his hometown for a new beginning up north. The play poignantly portrays his quest for fulfillment amidst the realities of life in the mid-20th century. Marshall, who previously portrayed Cephus himself, remarked, “I am blessed to see it with more seasoned eyes and approach the work differently now, in my role as the director.” It’s exciting to think about how this new production will reflect the unique perspectives of both the actors and the director!
Dive into History with The Drama of King Shotaway
The second production, The Drama of King Shotaway, offers a fascinating glimpse into history. This staged reading, directed by Nakeisha Daniel, explores America’s first Black theatre company, the African Grove Theatre. Set in 1822 Greenwich Village, the play follows impresario William Brown and his troupe as they break boundaries, presenting a drama about the indigenous Black Caribs of St. Vincent and their fight against British rule. This unique exploration of art and activism is sure to resonate with audiences, especially during a time of cultural reflection.

Mark your calendars! Performances of Home happen on September 27, 28, and 30, with additional dates on October 2-5 at 7:30 p.m. There’s also a matinee on September 29 at 2:00 p.m. Following that, The Drama of King Shotaway will be presented on October 4 and 5 at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices range from $8 to $30, making it accessible for everyone. Discounts are available for seniors, veterans, military personnel, as well as students and faculty of the College of Charleston.
