Exciting September Happenings at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston

As the golden hues of fall begin to paint the streets of Charleston, the Gibbes Museum of Art is ready to welcome the season with open arms and a delightful calendar of events. There’s something for everyone this September, whether you’re an art aficionado, film lover, or simply looking for an enriching experience in our beautiful city.

Engaging Virtual Discussions

Kicking off the month, the Gibbes invites you to a fascinating virtual event titled Cuba Talks: Cuban Art Beyond Borders. Scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, this discussion features an inspiring line-up of speakers. You’ll hear from Laura Salas Redondo, the author of Cuba Talks, as well as contemporary Cuban American artist Reynier Llanes and art historian Patricia Diaz.

This promising discussion gives us a chance to dive deep into the rich and diverse world of Cuban art and its diaspora. You’ll learn about the influential artists transforming this narrative from Havana to Charleston, with exciting insights from the experts. Don’t forget, while attendance is free, you need to register in advance!

Classic Films with a Twist

Next on the agenda are the much-anticipated film screenings featuring the legendary Spike Lee. Over three consecutive Thursdays—September 12, 19, and 26—the Gibbes partners with the Terrace Theater to showcase some of Lee’s classic films. These screenings are a perfect lead-up to the Distinguished Lecture Series event taking place on October 15 where Lee will discuss the relationship between cinema and visual arts.

Grab a friend or two, and cozy up for an evening that celebrates the creativity and passion of one of America’s most influential filmmakers!

Visiting Artists Program

This month, the Gibbes is thrilled to host two visiting artists: Karl Zurfluh and Tiangxing Xu, who will be showcasing their works from September 9 to October 20.

Zurfluh’s series titled Light Pilots reimagines visual language through the layering of various elements using charcoal, acrylic, latex, and aerosol paint. The result? A depth and texture that you can almost feel! On the other hand, Xu presents a thought-provoking collection that conceptualizes an imaginary amusement park, blending printmaking with installations, all while evoking forgotten emotions.

Calling All Artists

For all aspiring artists out there, the Gibbes is currently accepting applications for their Visiting Artist program until September 30. This exciting opportunity welcomes eight artists each year to explore and reinterpret art in the South. Artists of all backgrounds are invited to apply and will receive a weekly honorarium, alongside materials to help bring their visions to life. Following the residency, artists can exhibit their works and even collaborate on exclusive items for the Museum Store. What a fantastic way to give your creativity a platform!

Thematic Exhibitions You Don’t Want to Miss

While you’re at the museum, take a moment to check out the ongoing exhibitions like I Can Make a Difference, showcasing the inspiring work of the scholars from Metanoia’s Freedom Summer. This exhibition pays homage to the 60th anniversary of Freedom Summer, focusing on the young artists’ photography that reflects their community and dreams of making a difference. It’s a heartfelt exploration that’s as touching as it is visually captivating.

Artistic Spotlight

The museum will also feature an artist spotlight from August 23 to December 1, shining the light on the renowned David Driskell and early modernist Edward Middleton Manigault. Each artist’s works tell a compelling story that will resonate with visitors.

So, grab your calendar and mark these fantastic events down! The Gibbes Museum of Art is an integral part of Charleston’s vibrant culture, and this September promises to be a thrilling month filled with art, film, and community spirit.
