Charleston is buzzing with excitement as Greystar Development has officially kicked off the second phase of its stunning $185 million Courier Square apartments on the oh-so-charming King Street corridor. It was a moment to remember last week as they celebrated this big step forward with a groundbreaking ceremony that had the whole community talking!
One of the standout moments of the event was the impressive relocation of an historic live oak tree. Can you believe it? This beautiful tree, which is a symbol of resilience, was moved right along Saint Phillips Street to make way for a lovely greenspace for everyone to enjoy. DJ Van Slambrook, senior director at Greystar, explained, “This project represents growth and transformational change for this part of Charleston.”
The new apartment complex will stretch an impressive 400 feet along King Street, bringing in around 300 residents to the heart of downtown Charleston. But wait, there’s more! The ground floor will feature a whopping 13,000 square feet of retail space ready to lease. It’s an exciting development that promises more options for shopping and dining in the neighborhood, making it a great addition to the Charleston community.
Greystar isn’t going it alone! They’ve paired up with Evening Post Industries, who has been involved with the Courier Square project for nearly four years. Ron Owens, CEO of Evening Post Industries, shared his enthusiasm saying, “This oak tree is a great symbol of the long-term roots we have going back so far.” Doesn’t that just warm your heart? It’s all about creating a space that will be cherished for years to come!
In a lovely community touch, students from Charleston’s American College of the Building Arts are putting their skills to the test by crafting architectural elements for the new apartments. Think hand-carved keystones and beautiful ironwork! Christian Sottile, the civic design architect for the Courier Square project, noted how incredible it is to see students’ work becoming part of the actual structure.
What’s next, you ask? Greystar has even more plans for the area. Owens talks about a futuristic project called The Peninsula of Charleston, which will rise next door. It’s going to be a residential building for seniors, featuring about 143 units and in-house healthcare. How amazing is that?!
As we look towards the future of this evolving community, Van Slambrook emphasizes, “We owed it to Charleston to have a building that’s worthy of Charleston and worthy to King Street.” The focus is laser-sharp on enriching the neighborhood while also preserving its unique character. The Courier Square project is expected to wrap up around March 2027, so mark your calendars, folks!
With ongoing developments and initiatives showcasing such strong community ties, it’s clear that Charleston’s growth is just taking off. Residents can look forward to not just new homes, but a vibrant community space for everyone to enjoy.
