Exciting New Exhibitions Set to Transform Charleston’s Gibbes Museum of Art This Fall

Exciting New Exhibitions Coming to Charleston’s Gibbes Museum of Art

Hey there, art lovers! If you’re in Charleston or planning a visit, you’re in for a treat! The Gibbes Museum of Art is rolling out some truly spectacular exhibitions this fall, starting in August 2024. Prepare to immerse yourself in a wide array of artwork that touches on important themes such as health and wellness, social justice, innovation and conservation, and the environment. Whether you’re a long-time art enthusiast or just starting your journey, there’s something for everyone!

Artist Spotlight Series: Celebrating Two Talented Artists

Kicking things off on August 23, 2024, the museum will launch its Artist Spotlight Series, featuring the incredible works of two very different, yet equally inspiring artists: Edward Middleton Manigault and David Driskell. This series will run until December 1, 2024, and will showcase the thoughts and intentions behind select pieces from each artist.

Edward Middleton Manigault, an early 20th-century painter, is best known for his modernist styles that truly took the art world by storm during his short life. You’ll be amazed by his unique vision and how it paved the way for future artists. Then we have David Driskell, a renowned artist and scholar who beautifully weaves themes of ancestry, faith, and nature into his work. His passion for community shines through every piece, making it a must-see.

A Celebration of Southern Art

As we move into October, get ready for a milestone event at the Gibbes Museum: the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. This celebrated exhibition will open on October 11, 2024, and run through January 12, 2025. The 1858 Prize has recognized 15 talented artists since its inception in 2008, and this year will celebrate winners and finalists who have made significant impacts on the art scene in the South.

This exhibition is proudly supported by the museum’s energetic youth group, Society 1858. You won’t want to miss this chance to see how these artists are reshaping the narrative of Southern art while creating a deeper understanding of the culture and experiences that inspire them!

Beeple Takes the Stage

And last but certainly not least, mark your calendars for another exciting exhibition featuring none other than the digital art pioneer, Beeple. Beginning on December 13, 2024 and lasting until May 2025, the Gibbes will unveil Beeple’s latest kinetic sculptures, which are being showcased together for the very first time in Charleston.

Beeple, whose real name is Mike Winkelmann, shot to fame after his NFT artwork titled EVERYDAYS: THE FIRST 5000 DAYS sold for an eye-popping amount at Christie’s in 2021. His work, particularly the generative sculpture HUMAN ONE, has been featured in various prestigious venues, including the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas.

Final Thoughts

If you’re excited about this upcoming array of artistic wonders, you’re not alone! The Gibbes Museum of Art promises an unforgettable experience with these special exhibitions that celebrate creativity and important social themes. Whether it’s diving into the thoughtful works of Manigault and Driskell, celebrating contemporary Southern creators, or marveling at Beeple’s innovative sculptures, there’s something waiting for everyone.
