This event marks the culmination of Green’s inspiring journey through her residency, and it promises to showcase a delightful collection of mixed media works that reflect her unique perspective and experiences. From October 25th through November 1st, 2024, the charming Park Circle Community Building at 4800 Park Circle will be transformed into a colorful gallery filled with Shayn’s artwork.

A Special Opening Reception

Mark your calendars because the opening reception is free and open to the public! Join fellow art enthusiasts on Friday, October 25th, from 6 PM to 8 PM to celebrate Shayn’s amazing work. It’s a wonderful opportunity for locals to engage with art and meet the artist behind the creations. Whether you’re an avid art lover or just curious, this evening promises to be packed with creativity and inspiration.

Meet the Artist: Shayn Green

Shayn Green was selected this summer as North Charleston’s very first Artist-in-Residence as part of a new pilot program aimed at fostering local talent. Throughout her residency, which runs from August to October 2024, Green has been busy creating art in a dedicated 270 sq. ft. studio within the community building. But that’s not all! She has also organized two engaging workshops for the community, allowing residents to explore their artistic potential. In September, she hosted a mixed media wall hanging class, followed by a zine-making class in October, both drawing enthusiastic support from participants.

What to Expect in the Exhibition

Entitled “Big Nose Baddies,” Shayn’s exhibition will feature an eclectic array of mixed media pieces that she has created before and during her time as an Artist-in-Residence. Her artwork is characterized by striking and exaggerated portraits that draw inspiration from her personal experiences as a black and queer woman, as well as her rich cultural heritage from her Geechee family. Shayn uses a combination of drawing, painting, sculpting, and sewing techniques to create eye-catching pieces that embrace both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.

With her art, Shayn seeks to celebrate diversity and highlight black beauty, making her work relatable and uplifting for others in the black and brown community. Her intention is clear: “Growing up, I did not see a lot of artwork showcasing black and brown people with features like mine,” Green notes. “I wanted to create something that is fun, colorful, and maybe a little magical for all the Big Nose Baddies out there.” Through her vibrant pieces, Shayn aims to shift the narrative away from pain and hardship, focusing instead on the joy and uniqueness of individual identities.

About Shayn Green

A proud graduate of the Charleston County School of the Arts, Shayn further honed her skills with a BA in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina in 2019. Her artistic talents shine through her specialization in portraiture, literary illustrations, and graphic design. Color plays a crucial role in her creations, enhancing the emotions and stories she wants to convey through her art.

This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for the North Charleston community and beyond to come together and celebrate local artistry.
