Exciting Music Returns to Charleston: The 2nd Monday Concert Series is Back!

Charleston, prepare your ears for a melodious treat! The College of Charleston Department of Music is thrilled to announce the return of its beloved 2nd Monday Concert Series. After a long pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic and some renovations, the concerts are set to make a grand comeback on October 14, 2024. This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in some beautiful music right in the heart of the city.

What to Expect

Happening every second Monday of the month, these concerts feature an eclectic mix of performances by talented faculty artists from the Department of Music. The series had been running smoothly until they had to hit the brakes back in February 2020. But now, it’s time to regroup and start enjoying the magic of live music once more.

The First Concert: A Celebration of Voice

The kickoff concert will spotlight the College’s voice faculty, and you won’t want to miss it! At 7:30 PM on Monday, October 14, the performance will take place in the newly renovated Recital Hall at the Simons Center for the Arts. Featured artists include sopranos Amanda Castellone, Saundra DeAthos-Meers, and Megan Warburton; tenor Harold Meers; baritone David Templeton; and pianist Lorna Baker. These artist-scholars are not just incredible performers; they’re active in both the local music scene and broader concert venues across the nation and internationally!

A Repertoire Worth Listening To

During this inaugural concert, attendees can look forward to an array of operatic and song literature that hold special meaning for the performers. Expect to hear pieces by iconic composers like Verdi, Puccini, Strauss, and Rodgers & Hammerstein, among others. Whether you’re an opera aficionado or just a casual listener, there’s bound to be something that will resonate with you!

State-of-the-Art Upgrades

The upgraded Recital Hall is ready to impress! Michael O’Brien, Chair of the Department of Music, expressed enthusiasm about the improvements, stating, “Our performers and audiences alike will enjoy updated technology with improved lighting and sound in this space.” Plus, with new seating, patrons can relax and soak in the experience comfortably. It’s clear that both the performers and the audience will be in for a delightful experience.

Mark Your Calendars for Future Performances

The excitement doesn’t stop with the voice concert! The 2nd Monday Concert Series has more surprises lined up, including a performance by the Spartina Consort in November, known for their expertise in Renaissance and Baroque music. Additionally, mark your calendars for a fantastic faculty jazz concert in February. There’s plenty of musical nourishment ahead!
