Daring Escape Leads to Several Charges Against Motorist

In a recent turn of events in Folly Beach, S.C. a man has been detained and is now facing multiple charges after attempting to evade a traffic stop initiated by local police. Shaun Anthony Kelly, the driver in question, has been charged with failure to stop for blue lights, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, hit and run of an unattended vehicle, and possession of MDMA.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, the incident unfolded when officers attempted to pull over Kelly who was seen driving in the wrong direction on a one-way street. Upon noticing the blue lights, police describe that Kelly reversed his vehicle into an unoccupied car and fled the scene, instigating a short chase. Kelly was apprehended after a pursuit covering just one city block.

Kelly’s Subsequent Arrest and Medical Condition

Following Kelly’s apprehension, he lost consciousness while in police custody. Initial assumptions are suggesting that this collapse may be attributable to drug use, leading to Kelly being rushed to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.

Discovery of Illegal Items

During subsequent investigation at the stop scene and at the police station, officers discovered a pistol at the base of the driver’s seat of Kelly’s vehicle. More concerningly, they found MDMA, popularly known as Ecstasy, concealed near Kelly’s groin area. This discovery instigated another charge related to drug possession.

Charges Against the Passenger

There was also a female passenger in the vehicle, identified as Chantey Denise Daise, who was cited for having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle. She was later released after being issued with her citation.

Current Situation

Considering the severity of multiple charges, Kelly remains in custody at the Al Cannon Detention Center. The extent of his legal consequences will eventually depend on the outcomes of the associated court proceedings.

Response from Law Enforcement Agencies

Law enforcement agencies are using this opportunity to emphasize the seriousness of not only possessing illegal substances and firearms, but also compliance with traffic laws. They are urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement at all times, reminding residents that it is crucial to address traffic stops calmly and responsibly to avoid unnecessary consequences.

Communities Reaction

The incident has left the local community shaken as it underscores the potential dangers of daily traffic stops for officers. Locals are keenly awaiting further updates regarding Kelly’s charges and the eventual verdict.
