Emma Lemley, a senior pitcher for the Virginia Tech Hokies, delivered a performance for the ages, throwing a perfect game against the College of Charleston. It wasn’t just any game – it was a 10-0 victory that concluded in just five exciting innings!
This stunning achievement has now made Lemley the sixth pitcher in the university’s history to accomplish a perfect game. During this thrilling face-off, she faced a total of 15 batters, striking out an impressive eight of them! To add to her accolades, this was Lemley’s first perfect game at the collegiate level, as well as her second no-hitter overall.
The victory marks a proud moment not only for Lemley but for the entire Hokie softball program, which has now recorded eight perfect games in its history. The last one was thrown by Keely Rochard back on April 10, 2019. It’s safe to say that Virginia Tech is no stranger to sensational pitching performances!
As the season progresses, Lemley is proving to be a powerhouse on the mound. With her record now standing at 2-0, she’s played a crucial role in helping Virginia Tech maintain a flawless overall record of 5-0. Overall, she maintains a jaw-dropping 0.00 ERA in her two outings this season, striking out a total of 22 batters across 11 innings. Talk about making every pitch count!
In her very first game of the season, she yielded just one hit while striking out 14 batters over six innings, leading the Hokies to a confident 12-0 win over Fordham. There’s no denying that Lemley’s current form has made her one of the most exciting athletes to watch as the season unfolds.
Lemley has her sights set high, aspiring to help nail down Virginia Tech’s first-ever team national championship. Her mindset revolves around treating every pitch like it’s the final moment of the World Series. That level of focus and determination is inspiring to teammates and fans alike.
The Hokies are currently ranked No. 17 in the national preseason coaches’ Top 25 poll, and Lemley is shining brightly on individual accolades as well. She’s been recognized as a preseason All-ACC selection and made it onto USA Softball’s Top-50 Player of the Year Watchlist. Last season, she delivered a stellar performance, clinching a place on the All-ACC second team with a record of 13-5, a 2.64 ERA, and an eye-catching 158 strikeouts over 127.1 innings.
Looking back over her four years at Virginia Tech, Lemley acknowledges the tremendous growth and resilience she’s shown, overcoming adversity along the way. Prior to joining the Hokies, she wowed fans at Jefferson Forest High School, where she pitched three perfect games during her senior year, including a standout game where she struck out 20 out of 21 batters!
