In a deeply unsettling incident out of North Charleston, South Carolina, a man has been arrested and charged after his elderly mother was discovered in a severely neglected condition.
68-year-old Salvador Gonzales Rivera has been arrested and charged by Charleston County Sheriff’s Office with exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The authorities conducted a welfare check at Rivera’s residence based on a concern raised. During the check, an 88-year-old woman was discovered lying on her bed, surrounded by unsanitary living conditions that were clearly caused by prolonged negligence.
The woman, later identified as Rivera’s mother, was found to be laying in her own excrement, with law enforcement stating she had been in that state for approximately four weeks. Disturbingly, it was revealed that a medical professional had not examined her in approximately eight months.
The elderly woman appeared to be heavily malnourished and was taken to the hospital by EMS personnel. Upon closer medical examination, doctors concluded that the woman was suffering from multiple serious health issues. She had a broken hip and severe bed sores that were infested with maggots, indicating a significant lack of care over an extended period of time.
Further, the woman was severely dehydrated and emaciated. The detailed medical examination brought to light an evidently disturbing level of disregard for the welfare of the woman, leading to the charges against Rivera.
Following his arrest, Salvador Gonzales Rivera was presented before a judicial officer for his initial hearing. The judge set the bail bond at $100,000. Following the hearing, Rivera was detained at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center where he awaits further legal proceedings pertaining to his charges.
This case represents a shocking incident of elder abuse, reflecting the severity of such situations that often remain unnoticed behind closed doors. The consequences of Rivera’s actions have now been brought to light and will be appropriately dealt with by the legal system moving forward.
This case serves as a stark reminder for society to stay vigilant of the wellbeing of vulnerable individuals within their community. By doing so, future incidents of such gross neglect can be prevented, ensuring the welfare and dignity of the vulnerable amongst us.
