Charleston Kicks Off Early Voting for Historic Election

Oh, what an exciting time it is for residents here in Charleston, South Carolina! Monday marked the first day of early voting, and folks are buzzing with energy as they prepare to make their voices heard. The atmosphere is electric as voters can now take to any of the seven designated early voting locations across Charleston County. It’s like a mini-festivity where the power to choose is truly in the hands of the people!

Record Numbers Expected

This year, the excitement is palpable, with an estimated 100,000 early voters expected to cast their ballots in Charleston County alone. According to Isaac Cramer, the Executive Director of the Charleston County Board of Elections, this could potentially shatter previous records! “We anticipate early voting to break records for Charleston County because of the excitement in the voters. They want to cast their ballots; it’s a presidential election, and also for the convenience,” Cramer said, capturing the mood of the community perfectly.

A Game-Changer: The Early Voters Bill

In 2022, the state passed the Early Voters Bill, which is making waves this election cycle. Now, voters can hit the polls without needing a specific reason to do so. This marks the first major election under the new law, allowing anyone to cast their ballot early in-person, and all you need is a valid photo ID. Cramer points out that this change is huge, saying, “We are trying to get the message out that they don’t need a reason anymore. If they just want to vote early, they can.” It’s like a breath of fresh air for voters looking to get ahead of the game!

Accepted Forms of ID

If you’re planning to head out and vote early, make sure you have one of the accepted forms of photo ID with you. This includes:

  • South Carolina driver’s license
  • South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles ID Card
  • South Carolina Concealed Weapons Permit
  • South Carolina voter registration card with photo
  • United States military ID
  • United States passport

Convenience at Its Best

So why should you take advantage of early voting? Cramer emphasizes the convenience factor by saying that with early voting, “voters get to choose the location, time, and date that they would like to vote, rather than being constricted to 12 hours on election day and only going to an assigned polling place.” That’s right! No more rushing around on election day trying to find the right polling station. Plus, if you need assistance, curbside voting options are available at every location.

When and Where to Vote

Early voting runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will continue until November 2nd. While the local bus service, CARTA, won’t be offering free rides to the polls during early voting, fret not! They will be providing that service on election day, ensuring everyone has the chance to participate.

If you’re unsure where to go for early voting, look out for the signs or ask around; there are seven locations across Charleston County ready to welcome voters with open arms. It’s time to make your voice count and be a part of history!

In this pivotal moment for our city, make sure to seize the opportunity. Whether you want to vote early for convenience or just can’t wait to make your choice, early voting is a fantastic option. Happy voting, Charleston!
