In Charleston, South Carolina, the esteemed International African American Museum (IAAM) is preparing to honor renowned American novelist, playwright, and essayist, James Baldwin, on what would be his 100th birthday. Dr. Frank Thomas, a noted thought leader and scholar, has been called upon to lead the conversation and tribute to James Baldwin. The event is to be held on February 29, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the IAAM’s Centre for Family History located at 14 Wharfside Street, Charleston.
Baldwin’s works, concentrated on the intricate entanglement of identity and societal inequality, keep striking chords with readers and activists globally. His contributions to discourses on race and equality, as well as his significant involvement in the civil rights movement, have made an indelible mark on American history and Black culture.
Dr. Frank Thomas, accomplished in Communications (Rhetoric), is equipped to lead discussions on Baldwin’s legacy. Currently, he serves as the Nettie Sweeney and Hugh Th. Miller Professor of Homiletics at the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Thomas is also the Director of the Academy of Preaching and Celebration at the same seminary. The conversation led by Thomas aims to delineate how Baldwin’s spiritual underpinnings shaped his career as a writer and how his life, legacy and literature bear testimony to his undying faith.
The program falls under the TD Bank Series and seeks to honor the knowledge, culture, and traditions bequeathed by African American ancestors. It also aims to inspire individuals to conserve and fulfill those dreams and aspirations. The IAAM embodies the history, culture, and impact of African American people on Charleston, the nation, and the world at large. The museum is an advocate for authentic, empathetic storytelling that disrupts institutionalized racism. Its mission is to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at the historically sacred site of Gadsden’s Wharf and beyond.
As the 100th birthday of the influential James Baldwin approaches, the International African American Museum, in collaboration with Dr. Frank Thomas, is set to appreciate his life and works. The event promises to be a fitting tribute to an iconic figure who used his pen as a tool to challenge societal injustices and promote equality and justice. His life and works symbolize an enduring legacy that keeps inspiring and influencing generations.
