24 Dogs from Charleston Sent to Salem Shelter Due to Tropical Storm Debby

In an urgent response to the impending threat of Tropical Storm Debby, twenty-four dogs were relocated from a Charleston shelter to the MSPCA Angel Northeast animal shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. This pre-emptive action was initiated to create room in Charleston’s local shelters ahead of the incoming storm.

Furry Friends on the Move

Chelsea Courvell and Chelsea Lopresto, both experienced in animal transports, received an emergency call requesting them to start journeying towards South Carolina. They immediately left Louisiana, where they had been attending personal matters. “We got a call on Monday night about six o’clock pm said, ‘can you leave for eight?’ And I was at Walmart with my daughter, school supply shopping, and I was like, ‘We gotta go’,” Lopresto narrated.

A Night Drive for a Noble Cause

The two, driven by their passion for animal welfare, endured the long nocturnal drive. Their commitment ensured that the 24 dogs arrived safely in Salem before dawn, ready for a new start.

A New Chapter in Salem

Upon arrival, the dogs, ranging in age from five months to three years, were put in mandatory quarantine for 48 hours, as per Massachusetts’s law governing out-of-state animal transports. The quarantine is to be followed by a thorough health check by the shelter’s vet team.

“We’re really excited to be able to take in some pets ahead of the storm. So that opens up some kennels at Charleston so they can but be more prepared to respond to any sort of animals,” a shelter worker shared.

Once these formalities are completed, the dogs will be ready for adoption, offering them a fresh chance at life away from the destructive path of Tropical Storm Debby.

Storm Watch

The tropical storm, Debby, has been drumming up foreboding forecast updates, promising torrents of rain and potential flooding across the Carolinas. The evacuation of animals from the possibly affected regions effectively grants more room for disaster-stricken animals that may need immediate shelter and care in the aftermath of the storm.

The quick response and proactive measures taken by the animal shelters and the relentless efforts of Courvell and Lopresto have undoubtedly saved these canines from the potential danger. These dogs now look forward to a safer environment and a hopeful future in the Salem shelter, even as Debby continues her unsettling approach.
