CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston has made an exciting addition to its men’s basketball roster with the signing of Derrin Boyd for the 2024-25 season. Boyd, who hails from Kentucky, brings a wealth of talent and experience to the team after earning All-ASUN second team honors during his time at Lipscomb.
Boyd showcased his skills as Lipscomb’s leading scorer, averaging 17.6 points per game and ranking 4th in the ASUN in scoring. Despite playing in 22 games and starting in 20 games before a season-ending injury, Boyd made a significant impact on the court with his scoring prowess.
According to College of Charleston head coach Chris Mack, Boyd is a high-level scorer capable of scoring at all three levels. His shooting percentages are equally impressive, with Boyd connecting at a 53% clip overall, 44% from three-point range, and 84% from the free-throw line.
Boyd’s performance in ASUN play was particularly noteworthy, with the guard shooting over 53% from the field and nearly 49% from beyond the arc. He averaged 18 points per game in conference play, demonstrating his consistency and reliability as a scorer.
Throughout the season, Boyd recorded double-digit points in 19 games, including nine 20+ point performances. His standout game came against Florida Gulf Coast, where he tallied an impressive 38 points in a single game.
Coach Mack expressed confidence in Boyd’s ability to make a significant impact on the team, not only with his scoring ability but also with his leadership qualities and maturity. Despite his injury last season, Boyd is expected to be fully prepared when the new season commences.
Prior to his time at Lipscomb, Boyd played for two seasons at NAIA Georgetown College, where he garnered recognition as an Honorable Mention All-American and received two Mid-South Conference first team selections. His collegiate experience has equipped him with the skills and mindset to excel at the Division I level.
Boyd’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the court, as he was honored as the ASUN Scholar Athlete of the Year. His dedication to academics and athletics exemplifies the well-rounded student-athlete that College of Charleston seeks to cultivate.
With Boyd’s signing, the anticipation for the 2024-25 men’s basketball season at College of Charleston has reached new heights. Fans can look forward to witnessing Boyd’s impact on the team and his contribution to the Cougars’ pursuit of success on the court.
