DANIEL ISLAND, SC – It’s hard to wrap our heads around the tragic events that unfolded on the night of October 24, when a young life was abruptly taken in a devastating accident involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The Charleston Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is currently on the scene, working diligently to uncover all the details surrounding this heartbreaking incident.
According to the reports, the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on Seven Farms Drive, close to the intersection of Pier View Street and Bucksley Lane. The details reveal that the pedestrian, later identified by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office as Ms. Candice Snead, a 31-year-old resident of Colorado, had entered the roadway in the 200 block of Seven Farms Drive when she was struck by a vehicle. Despite being quickly transported to a local hospital for urgent care, Ms. Snead unfortunately succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
The driver involved in the accident remained on the scene and has cooperated with law enforcement. As it stands, no charges have been filed as the investigation continues. Police are urging anyone with information regarding the accident to come forward by contacting the Charleston Police Department Traffic Unit at (843) 965-4084.
This tragic incident has reignited discussions about pedestrian safety in that particular area, which has been noted as a growing concern for both pedestrians and drivers. In fact, District 1 City Councilman Boyd Gregg previously addressed this issue during a meeting with the Daniel Island Neighborhood Association, announcing that the city was finalizing designs for pedestrian improvements at the Pier View crosswalk. Those plans include collaboration with Dominion Energy to enhance the nighttime lighting on the road, aiming to boost visibility and safety for those who walk.
Councilman Gregg expressed his condolences regarding the accident, stating, “It’s a heartbreaking situation, and my thoughts are with everyone involved.” He further commented on the city’s active involvement in improving pedestrian safety, mentioning that they are in the process of making necessary design modifications related to curb bulb outs and stormwater management, in addition to incorporating enhanced lighting.
While there’s currently no specific timeline for when these safety updates will be implemented, Councilman Gregg remains hopeful that significant progress could be seen next year, stating, “We are committed to making Daniel Island a safer place for everyone.”
This accident marks the ninth fatal traffic-related collision the Charleston Police Department has investigated as of October 25, adding to the urgency of enhancing safety measures on our roads. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of being aware and cautious while navigating our streets, regardless of whether you are behind the wheel or on foot.
As the community comes to grips with this tragic loss, conversations about safety measures continue to be a priority. Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the importance of pedestrian safety and advocate for measures that will protect our loved ones when they are out and about.
In these difficult times, our thoughts are with Ms. Snead’s family and friends, and with everyone touched by this devastating event. The community will continue to unite to look for ways to improve safety on our streets, ensuring that tragedies like this one become a thing of the past.
