Folks, get ready to tuck into some exciting culinary news from Charleston! This charming city has been basking in the spotlight thanks to an exciting new feature by a top restaurant industry platform. That’s right – the culinary scene here is set to turn heads as StarChefs has announced its latest group of Rising Star Award winners, and let me tell you, the competition was fierce!
On November 25, the culinary experts at StarChefs released a list of 19 exceptional individuals from Charleston and its neighbor Savannah. These talented chefs, bartenders, and bakers are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the food and beverage industry. How cool is that? The editors spent weeks tasting the dishes and drinks at over 500 establishments, and the hard work has certainly paid off!
Let’s kick things off with some of the shining stars here in Charleston. Recognized for their incredible skills are Nathan Hedlund from Da Toscano Porchetta Shop, Thai Phi of Pink Bellies, and Jillian Schaffer from FIG. We also have the dynamic duo, Hannah and Zachary Welton from Weltons Tiny Bakeshop, lighting up our culinary landscape. Not to forget the amazing Hector Garate from Palmira Barbecue and the talented Corrie and Shuai Wang from Jackrabbit Filly and King BBQ.
The beverage scene got its fair share of recognition too! Zach McCutchen of Prophet Coffee and Christian Favier of Seahorse (formerly known as The Ordinary) made the cut. Brent and Danielle Sweatman from Sweatman’s Garden were celebrated for their contributions to the community. Talk about community spirit!
This year, Nikko Cagalanan from Kultura snagged the prestigious Gamechanger Award. This accolade goes to chefs advancing the industry through innovation and unique ideas. Big congrats, Nikko! And let’s take a moment to applaud the Mentor Award winner, chef and co-owner of FIG and The Ordinary – the one and only Mike Lata. His ongoing guidance and inspiration have indeed shaped many young talents in the industry.
The team at StarChefs describes our beloved Charleston as a place that has blossomed into a truly formidable foodie city in recent years. Factors such as a surge in tourism, new residents, and entrepreneurial flair from locals have invigorated the hospitality scene. The result? A vibrant, inviting, and simply delicious culinary landscape that’s hard to resist!
It’s also worth mentioning that this StarChefs feature marks the first time Savannah has been highlighted, showing just how much both cities have gained momentum in the culinary world. The magazine’s arrival coincides with the StarChefs Rising Stars Restaurant Week happening from December 4-18. During this time, over a dozen restaurants will showcase signature dishes crafted by the award winners. It’s a perfect opportunity to experience some culinary magic! Don’t miss out!
StarChefs has big plans for the future. Their editorial team, led by the discerning eye of Managing Partner Will Blunt, will be venturing to cities like New York, Miami, Houston, and beyond next year to uncover even more dining gems. Isn’t it thrilling to see Charleston and Savannah steeped in such culinary respect? Here’s hoping more delicious discoveries await us!
So folks, whether you’re seafood lovers, barbecue buffs, or dessert devourers, there’s no denying that Charleston is leading the charge in mouth-watering fare. Let’s celebrate our local talent and support them by indulging in some amazing food!
