Courier Square Phase II Project in Charleston Gets BAR-L’s Green Light

Courier Square Phase II Project in Charleston Gets BAR-L’s Green Light

The proposed Courier Square Phase II, Building I, located at 635 King Street, Charleston, SC, recently attained final approval from the city’s Board of Architectural Review (BAR-L). The redevelopment project, developed by Greystar, is expected to encompass apartments along with retail and mixed-use spaces.

An Architecture with a Feel of Charleston

The architectural design of the project is being handled by Sottile & Sottile, a reputable team based in Savannah, GA. The team wished to ensure that the designed structure does not lose the unique “Charleston feel” and has thus established five key requirements for their design, namely, a humane and local solution with a design that interacts well with all frontages, beautifies the skyline and improves the street experience.

Incorporating a Community-touch in the Project

In a drive to incorporate an essence of authenticity and uniqueness into the project, Sottile & Sottile and Greystar have engaged in various community meetings and talks over the past two years. Notably, individuals from the American College of the Building Arts have contributed elements to the project such as iron lanterns, gates, stone columns, sculpted terra cotta panels, and hand-carved keystones.

Courier Square Phase II: More Than Just a Building

The Courier Square Phase II project aims not just to add another building to Charleston’s skyline, but to impart an architectural standard that carries the city’s inherent aesthetic appeal. The project is regarded as an architectural testament that mirrors Charleston’s distinctive culture and ambiance.

Keeping Track of the Project and More

For those interested in the progress of the Courier Square Phase II project or any other developments across the city, one can attend a BAR meeting. These meetings occur twice a month, with the BAR-Large (BAR-L) meetings that handle large projects on the second and fourth Wednesdays and the BAR-Small (BAR-S) gatherings, that discuss smaller projects, on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month.

The city of Charleston awaits the completion of the Courier Square Phase II, Building I with great expectation, envisioning a structure that is planned to serve as a functional contributor to the city’s atmosphere and skyline.
