Cougars Take on Tigers in CAA Semifinals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The top-seeded College of Charleston men’s basketball team is gearing up to face off against the fifth-seeded Towson Tigers in the semifinals of the 2024 Jersey Mike CAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Monday, March 11. The Cougars secured their spot in the semifinals after a dominant 83-59 victory over No. 8 Monmouth in the quarterfinals, showcasing an impressive 50% shooting performance from the field.

Key contributors to the Cougars’ quarterfinal win included Ben Burnham with 16 points, Ante Brzovic with 15 points, Frankie Policelli with 14 points, and Kobe Rodgers with 13 points. The team has been on a roll, securing victory in their last six games by double-digit margins. Charleston currently boasts the second-longest winning streak in the country with ten consecutive wins under their belt.

The Cougars clinched their first outright regular-season title since 2003 and their first-ever in the CAA conference. Head coach Pat Kelsey’s leadership has propelled the team to become the CAA’s first outright regular-season champion in four years, marking a significant milestone for the program.

The Tigers and Cougars split their two regular-season meetings, with Towson edging out a victory in Charleston with a score of 82-78 on January 18. However, the Cougars bounced back with a strong performance, defeating Towson 72-56 on February 24. In their most recent clash, Charleston showcased their sharpshooting abilities by making 15 three-pointers at an impressive 68% shooting accuracy, marking the team’s best performance from beyond the arc this season.

Overall, the Cougars shot 54.3% from the field in the victory over Towson, coupled with a season-high 13 steals to seal the win. The upcoming semifinal matchup promises to be an intense battle between these two competitive teams vying for a spot in the championship game.

Upcoming Semifinal Showdown

Towson secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating No. 4 UNCW, setting the stage for a thrilling rematch against the Cougars. This will mark the second consecutive season that the Cougars and Tigers will face off in the postseason with a shot at the title game on the line.
