Hey there, Charleston! It’s that time of year again when the streets come alive with energy and excitement as the city prepares for the annual Cooper River Bridge Run. This much-anticipated 10K race is set to take place on Saturday, April 5, 2025, and it promises to be an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators alike!
Runners will kick off the race at 8:00 a.m., starting in beautiful Mount Pleasant. They’ll cross the iconic Arthur Ravenel Bridge into the heart of scenic downtown Charleston. For those who require a little extra time to get ready, wheelchair participants will hit the starting line even earlier at 7:25 a.m.. If you’re joining in on the fun, be sure to arrive by 7:00 a.m. sharp to ensure a smooth start!
This year, an impressive 36,488 participants have registered to take part in this thrilling event, making it a true celebration of community and fitness.
Now, let’s talk about getting around. As with any big event, there will be a few road closures in and around the race route. On race day, closures will commence at 9:00 a.m. on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant. If you’re planning to be in Charleston, George Street will be blocked from 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4, until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Similarly, Meeting Street will also experience closures starting at the same time.
The good news is that Coleman Boulevard is set to start reopening around 10:00 a.m., while areas like Fairmont Avenue, Hibben Street, and Chuck Dawley Boulevard should open by 11:00 a.m.. For those wandering around Marion Square, expect traffic to remain blocked until all cleanup is complete, hopefully around noon.
Once the race wraps up, get ready to celebrate! The fun doesn’t stop after crossing the finish line. A variety of post-race parties will be popping up at local bars and restaurants throughout Charleston. One of the most exciting spots will be Munkle Brewery, which is throwing an after-party from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. They’ll serve delicious food from Blackout Burger, and live music will set the vibe!
If you’re over 21 and wearing your race bib, head over to Beautiful South where they’re offering free baijiu shots! How about some post-race mimosas? Several locations, including Port of Call and Taco Boy, will have specials just for you! Not to forget, Commonhouse Aleworks is hosting the official post-race party from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., sponsored by Asics, where you can unwind and share tales from the race.
Feeling a bit peckish? Sesame Burgers & Beer will treat participants with complimentary snacks for those showing their bibs. Plus, look out for live music, food, and drink specials throughout the city as various bars and restaurants keep the merriment going with tequila specials, live DJs, and special cocktails.
For safety reasons, a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) will be in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on race day, which means no drones allowed around the bridge area. It’s all about ensuring everyone stays safe and enjoys this amazing event.
As many of you know, the Cooper River Bridge Run has become a cherished tradition since it first started in 1978, initially attracting just 766 finishers. Over the years, it has grown tremendously and now brings in around $33 million to the local economy annually! After some interruptions due to the pandemic, this year’s run is particularly special as the event celebrates its 48th anniversary.
So, there you have it, folks! Mark your calendars, lace up your running shoes, and get ready for an incredible day of racing and revelry in Charleston. Whether you’re running, cheering, or celebrating, the Cooper River Bridge Run is a true testament to our community spirit!
