In a demonstration of commitment to enhancing public safety and serving the rural community, Charleston County authorities have started the development of the Emergency Medical Station 8 facility in Edisto.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

Charleston County officials gathered on Wednesday, March 13, for a groundbreaking ceremony marking the commencement of construction work on the new facility. This Emergency Medical Station, located along Highway 174 in Edisto, will replace the existing property that was erected way back in 1971.

Officials’ Remarks

Eric Watson, Deputy County Administrator of Public Safety, expressed his gratitude towards the Charleston County Council for dedicating funds to upgrade the property on Edisto. Watson stated in a news release, “This new EMS Station will be a huge improvement for our staff who work in this area and will allow us to better serve this rural community.”

Councilmember Joe Boykin, an advocate for the continuous enhancement of public safety in the rural areas, expressed his excitement to be part of the groundbreaking event. He remarked, “As the County continues to grow, we saw the need for this upgraded EMS station. This new facility is a big improvement for our public safety personnel to provide the level of service our community deserves.”

Details about the New Facility

The new Emergency Medical Station 8 will spread over 5,000 square feet. It will feature several sections designed to support the emergency response process more efficiently. The shared office space for EMS and the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office will reside within this facility. Other features include a kitchen, fitness room, a four-bed bunk room, laundry area, an open bay garage capable of accommodating four ambulances, and secure parking and storage spaces.

Project Completion

According to the official news release, the construction of the new public safety facility is projected to be complete around late spring or early summer of 2025. The new establishment shall provide a substantial boost to public safety, particularly in the rural areas of Charleston County.

Charleston County’s Commitment to Public Safety

The initiation of this project signifies Charleston County’s unwavering commitment to enhance public safety, offering improved facilities to serve the local community, especially in rural areas. The new emergency response facility will provide a more conducive working environment for the public safety personnel, thus ensuring a better level of service for the residents of the community.
